D(isappointment)estiny, and why Destiny is such a startling failure.

I wasn't really that excited for Destiny, I purchased it because I figured it was a Bungie product and I was going to be getting my moneys worth. After playing the game and reading the forums before and after release I have come to these conclusions: 1. A lot of the issues/worries that people pointed out before the release, which were quickly attacked with childish and monotonous replies such as "go back to COD", or "it's a beta", actually turned out to be biggest reasons why I dislike this game. I actually find it comical to go back and read the comments from the old YouTube videos where skeptics with issues such as the lack of weapon variety, limited skill trees, and minimal story (now common gripes) were completely lambasted by mindless fansboys who seem to think that any possible problem with Destiny's game play is complete heresy, and that Destiny is indeed the pinnacle of variety, customization, story, and is in fact a newly discovered form of sliced bread. 2. This game's biggest supposed strength is its second weakest offering. Bungie gave the rationale of needing thousands of players online at once to populate its worlds as a reason to not send out review copies of Destiny. The problem is, Destiny is empty, and the social experience is meaningless. You don't need thousands of people to "populate" a destiny world for indeed I have only seen a max number of six guardians in a given patrol at once. I really question whether there was a real, and far more obvious reason for not sending out review copies of Destiny. On top of it, seeing other players is completely pointless; other players outside of your Fireteam are no more adding to a "social experience" than the bloodstains in Dark Souls (which feels more like a social adventure than Destiny IMO), they are nothing more than silent vignettes, which sometimes happen to occupy the same space as you. 3. Seriously, the weapon variety is completely garbage. I was completely disappointed when I have counted a total of two actual unique models for the shotgun, and every other gun I have seen is simply just a re-skin of the exact same beginner weapon with small tweaks (such as ammo counters and different scopes). Even the supposed "exotic" weapons and armor look pretty much identical as the gear I was getting at level 5. 4. The story. I don't know what was more disappointing, the fact I had no idea what I was doing, the annoying and not explained sci-fi jargon, or the fact that there are some people who are actually rationalizing this, saying that Bungie "intended" this so the player could make their own stories. I ask you, those of you who really enjoy Destiny, why is it you like it? I found that there is a difference between actually enjoying a game, and simply wanting to play it. Destiny had me coming back, because I was always thinking "it's going to so much better when I get _____" and never actually having that much fun in the moment. It's like a bad crush, all lust and no substance. I'm just tired of hearing people say "just wait, the real game kicks in later". Seriously, the problems a lot of people have with this game deal with its very foundation, and those aren't just going to go away with longer missions and harder enemies. We are what keep gaming companies in business, essentially they are working for us. If you're COMPLETELY satisfied with Destiny, by all means good for you, but to those of you who are disappointed, I urge you to utilize your power as a consumer and express your discontent. I certainly want another disappointment like this one.

  • I'm still having a lot of fun playing Destiny, but mostly due to the people who I play with. Much like most games I play these days, most of the fun isn't in the single player; it's in the multiplayer. We have many friendly rivalries going on in our clan, and even though most in-game accomplishments are solely based on luck, it's still fun to compete against one another; whether that be in gear acquisition or kills in the Crucible. We'll carry on clearing the new content each time they drip feed us some more, and in the meanwhile we'll also carry on clearing the same old content. I might not play Destiny as much as I did when it was released, but I still have that urge to stick around. Destiny is far from perfect, but I've had some great laughs, and I hope to have some more.

  • Lol people will never learn. I stop reading after the first few lines to know that what I hear is BS crying. Everyone wants everything handed out to them on a plate. If you understand the type of game bungie made, you would know that things you are demanding can't be given to you right away. Destiny is a great game and is very different than most games out there. They're bringing new content for us to play in the future both free and paid content. So don't cry on what's in the game now or what's not in the game. Like I said before, if you don't understand the type of game Destiny is you should learn some RPGs. Learn to wait and you'll get good and refreshing things.
