Bungie has a weird definition of "competitive multiplayer".

I have seen multiple quotes from Bungie about how they care about "competitive multiplayer" in Destiny but they have completely missed the mark of what that is. Right now Destiny has nothing more then casual pvp gameplay. Having pvp multiplayer by itself does not automatically make something competitive. The game is lacking two very basic things that almost every multiplayer game has had . They are Leaderboards and private/custom matches. You can add many features to enhance competitive multiplayer but without at least one of those two things competition is not possible. I would honestly like to know the design decision that led to those features not being included. A lot of people tell me that Bungie listens too much to the people on these forums who are so causal that rather than not caring about those features they don't wan't them which is something i never understood. If you look at the Halo series Bungie has been going further and further away from competitive multiplayer with every new release. Destiny, with the removal of custom matches leaving absolutely zero possibility of holding tournaments and competitive team ladders is just Bungie further distancing itself from the competitive scene. If Destiny is not meant to be a competitive multiplayer experience then i can understand that, its a very good co-op game and i like it a lot. If Bungie actually cares about competition then i strongly urge them to consider some of my suggestions: - Private/Custom matches - Without this teams cannot compete against each other, - Visible Leaderboards/Ranking system - Without this there is nothing to compete for. Even if Destiny has a good matchmaking system if you cannot see your rank it is meaningless. You must be able to rank down for poor performance or losing otherwise Ranks will be dependent on time played rather than skill. - Separate Ranked/Unranked gametypes - That way people who don't care or don't want the pressure of ranked can enjoy pvp. - Separate Clan gametype and Leaderboards - A gametype in which you can only play with your team to try and be the best would be appreciated. - Yearly stat reset and rewards - Rank reset would give people fresh start and motivation to compete. Rewards for attaining certain ranks would be nice. This would also be a great way to increase the longevity of the game. I really hope some of these features get implemented otherwise i think pvp will die off pretty quickly.

  • I agree in past MMOs i have been a die hard PvP person but with destiny i love PvE as it is much more fun the dungeons and raids in WoW. If they brought in Ranked/Unranked lobbies i think PvP in destiny would be much more appealing to me. Or at least an MMR system that put u with other players ur skill level

  • They say "competitive" to differentiate their two multiplayers modes. There's cooperative multiplayer (strikes, raids, story missions) and then there's multiplayer where you're competing against other players, thus making it competitive mp. It's not supposed to be some MLG-style mode like a game such as COD would have. The word competitive is only used to explain that in that mode, you will be fighting against other players, instead of with them.

    • Omg you nailed the nail on the head! That's how I feel man they need a ranking system it's like halo it doesn't feel right it's almost awkward it's not satisfying to win a match or even do well in a multiplayer match

    • I believe one of their "ranked" multiplayer ideas is their concept of the Iron Banner as it has leaderboards and you compete to be the best while it's online. Much like halo reach's arena playlist. I do agree on the lack of private games aspect though. This would be impossible for tournaments and things of that nature.
