How will MMO affect less hours played

Someone made a valid point over on another forum. Destiny has loot and the opportunity to unlock better gear... If someone has the time to put in 5 hours of gaming a day and someone else can only put in a few hours a week, this would mean that the person with less hours will constantly get smoked by those that have gained the better loot. This leaves the game only good for those that can put the hours in... Am I getting this right or am I missing something?

  • Don't get it twisted. Destiny is not even close to MMO. People with less hours to spend playing deserve to get smoked by those who spend all day on the game, just as people who spend all day on the game deserve to earn less money than someone who spends most of their time working.

  • PvP (besides the Iron Banner) is scaled so lvl 4s don't get smoked by lvl 20s because dmg is rounded down and everyone has 200 hp

  • While it completely makes a difference how fast you will acquire awesome items having less hours to play destiny shouldn't rob you of the experience altogether.

  • It will absolutely still be worth playing. There is so much PvE content that you can do solo or with a group of 3. It will not matter how your gear stacks up to theirs as you will still be having fun exploring, earning loot and blasting through alien AI in a finely tuned shooter. There are two main PvP modes, which is where I am guessing your growing concern comes from. Fear not! The main PvP mode : The Crucible, normalizes your stats. Meaning that your gun, armor, etc will all be on par with everyone else's. Granted playing more here will give players a better understanding of game mechanics and the maps, plus there is no substitute for experience. That being said I am an employed father with a girlfriend. I have a lot to balance and don't have the time to dedicate to gaming as much as I would like, but I still do very well in PvP modes where a lot of people have put more time into the game than I have, and I attribute this to raw skill. I have been gaming for over 30 years and have always found myself able to compete with the limited time that I have. The only game mode that I can see this hurting is "Iron Banner" where your gear, stats etc all come into play. Just don't play in the Iron Banner until you are satisfied your gear is at a level where you can compete. There is PLENTY to enjoy in Destiny, even if you can only put in a few hours a week. Complaining that it is not worth playing if you cannot dedicate as much time as the hardcore gamers is ridiculous. That is like complaining a friend is better at basketball, gold, piano, guitar etc because he puts more time into it than you do. OF COURSE they will be better / have better gear, but that does not mean you or anyone else should not play if you enjoy it. It is all about perspective IMO.

  • yes and no true the 5/day player has the opportunity to get more loot but that doesn't account for skill and the quality of play. If the 5/day player doesn't know how to build a character, what guns to pair with which buffs etc then his extra time is wasted. Now if you take players of equal skill and add the time difference yeah it kinda sucks but there are millions of destiny players and the game is mainly pve so how often will they encounter each other and who's to say their fire teams can't compensate or drag down their respective play levels. Too many variables and in the end I suspect the better player will always win out eventually regardless of circumstances

    • No, you're wrong. The crucible matches balance the player's weaponry and armor, with the exception being the Iron Banner event, which is designed to be unrestricted. Whoever that someone on the other forum is, is an idiot.

      • Eventually, the hours put in by a person 5 hours a week will be enough hours for good loot. "loot" is not based on hours/day.

        • I think there will be enough players of all skill levels that it will turn out ok. Most of the people here (myself included) in these forums will be putting a lot if hours in with multiple characters.... there will be tons of casuals out there as well. There would almost have to be with the number of people expected to buy the game.

        • In PVP loot does not matter as all gear has standardized damage values. However in the Iron Banner PVP event you will get owned by people with better gear since level advantages apply in that mode.

        • depends on what your doing. It's like any other game, you get rewarded for doing more.
