How Bungie Could Address In-Game Social Issues

Good Idea

217

Needs Work

55

One issue on a lot of people's minds is no proximity chat. I don't mind that it's not a feature. I think it makes for a safer, more fun environment online. But there still needs to be something more than the emotes we've been given to communicate. My idea: BEACONS. It's just a jumping off point but here's what I've got brewing in my skull. See Image 1: CHOOSE YOUR BEACON Basically if you're wanting to look for other people to play with in-game, my idea is to go set you're Fireteam Privacy to Public. But doing so opens a side menu option to SET A BEACON. Whether you're looking for people to play the story, do Raids and Strikes, explore, or go into the Crucible, you can choose between all of them. So when you're in the Tower or even out in the wild, this is how you might appear in the Roster Menu: See Image 2: ROSTER MENU The idea here being that as soon as you land in the Tower, you could check the Roster for players who share your interest and join them immediately. These BEACON icons on your player card would ideally be flashing or something to get the attention of whoever's looking. And if going into the Roster Menu is too complicated, maybe these BEACONS could appear over players' heads as you get near them. Maybe next to their level or gamertag. As I mentioned this is just a jumping off point. If you don't think it's good, please reply with why and/or what you would do to improve or change this idea. Thanks! Edit 1: Another Idea from Amusekus I was preferring more of a party finder like in FF14:ARR. A way to see who is looking, inspect their gear and class, actually communicate before doing activities. MM just puts you with random people. For many things in FF14:ARR people would form parties through party finder instead of using MM. Party Finder use could usually find or make more quality groups. Edit 2: DanielKBoom's Idea I think we need bigger. We only have 16 players in the tower? I hope we see more. The chances you will find a player that wants to join you are ok. I would like to see a board, like the bounty board. We post on it what we want. It will be seen by all the players that are on line, on your system. Bigger pool of players. All the players.

  • This is a great idea. But another way to get around the issues arisen from a proximity chat system is to simply have an option to enable or disable it. If you don't mind the possibilty of someone in your vicinity being a nuissance, simply disable it. If you don't, enable it.

    • Overthinking. The only thing the game needs is an "Invitation to FT" function in the wild. If the person wants to talk to you, they can join your fireteam for the duration of the chat. If not...they decline. If its a bad experience for them, they leave the fireteam, and you lose the ability to talk to them. ...and you have no real reason to talk to anyone away from the tower OTHER than to invite them to be a part of your team. Problem solved.

      • I like the idea of a roster in the tower (I posted something similar a little while back:D ) it could easily be made by recycling code already in place. The beacons could be implemented by modifying the current code for objective beacons in explore. But I have a feeling they just won't do anything this installment. During the pax stream they really made it sound like they are having a hard time syncing everybody up, and making last minute changes now that they've expanded, and are on their own as a studio. But hopefully we'll see something like that implemented in a sequel, our maybe a big patch if we're lucky.

      • What about some kinda chat box for typing or what not? I know it wouldn't work very well in the wilds but maybe just in the tower. I've never played any kind of MMO or "shared world game" that didn't have something like this. You could "shout" to everyone on the map or just "say" something to the people close by. It could be used to talk to a whole clan or just a friend. It's easy to filter too.

        • The Beacon icons. Best idea I've read here in a long time. It would be easy to implement too.

        • Is it confirmed 16 players at a time in a tower setting?

            • I like how warframe does it with the chat box. You can chat with other people about joining together in clans, trading with each other, and other random stuff. it allows you to easily search in game at any time for people looking for squadmates.

              • Beautiful idea! This is probably much easier than implementing Prox/Voice chat, so Bungie please get on this! This will help solve the "lack of communication" problem quite a bit!

VERY good! Much better than all the endless threads arguing over whether matchmaking is needed for raids or not. THIS is what we need!

                • Or we could have an open cht room wherever we go as long as we are in the same zone because in real life people can talk to each other face to face =P

                • As far as Explore mode goes, I really didn't mind that there was no proximity chat, I was happy just being able to talk to my fireteam. What did bother me however, was that there was no team chat in the Crucible. I love being able to coordinate with my team and half of my Xbox Live friends were made during PvP matches on Halo. Here's hoping team chat has been added in the final version or will be patched in the near future.

                • Isn't that why there's a mute feature in xbox live? I just don't get why the game is marketed to be so socially huge when you can't even talk.

                • I'm not sure if this will be fixed in the full game release but to those of you who didn't get the chance to play the beta there was absolutely no voice communication in the beta at all unless you were in a Fireteam with your friends. I realize bungie did this so that other can't ruin ones game experience due to mix slamming or just being an overall jerk, but if you ask me it was a terrible idea and ruins MY over all game experience as well as many others I'm sure. I would like to meet people in the community of destiny and it makes it hard to do that if I can never talk to anyone. I can especially see this being a problem with the end game content such as raids where you can only do it with your friends which is a gold idea might I add. Luckily I already have a few friends to run them with but let's say I bought an xbox just for destiny which I'm sure there are quite a few people that will. How am I supposed to meet 6 people in a game(that I can't talk in by the way) and get them altogether for the best part of the game it takes out a huge social experience if you ask me. I can see this being a bigger issue than the one they're trying to address. Please comment your opinions as I would like to see who agrees with me and who doesn't.

why not just have prox chat that can be toggled on and off? no speaking may make for a safer environment but certainly not a more fun one... it would be like going to a party where no one was allowed to talk, every one just sat there awkwardly drinks in hand staring at each other silently till some one who had a fear of being stared at broke down crying and then was shot on the spot for making a noise with their mouth... then the only otions available to express your distress at the situation would be to point at the man holding the gun and then interpretively dance a displeased gesture on the corps of the poor victim while all your friends either sat down or waved... simple not a fun time at all. also that really doesn't seem much safer either when you look at in the way my story views it...

                    • This idea sounds pretty good. I think Bungie is going to need to put in something better for chat then how the Beta worked. So many people are complaining over this issue. Personally I'd rather not talk to randos but reguardless, the option should still be there.

                      • Interesting! I don't know if I'd personally use anything like that. I very rarely have "good experiences" with randoms. I like you am also happy there's no proximity chat.

                        • Not a too bad idea, something I had stated many time is being able to find people with like interests. Your tool might be great locally. I thought of a tool you could use in orbit to find people to play with, like a menu to go through players. My way just make it easier to find players. Your way would be more social.

Streamlines one ability for social interaction and at the same time leaves the integrity of the existing gaming experience. I do like the way Bungie has it set up now. However, if I wanted further interaction then this concept is appealing and addresses a glaring flaw for many in regard to socializing. Very good idea... Bungie... take note and get'er done.

                            • The thing that annoys me the most is the marketing, they say its a living social world or whatever and its clearly not very social at all. There will be a lot of people wondering why no one is talking back when the game releases, just like many of us did in the beta. I wish they just confirm it so people actually know what the -blam!- is going on.
