No pilotable ships in Destiny.
After it was generally implied that ships would be flyable or at least feature in the game in some usable form, from the premise of 'Every Guardian gets their own ship', as well as a lot of concept art of ships in action, personal hangers etc, and the subsequent revelation that they are not flyable or usable in the game at all but merely a cut scene, i wanted to ask people, are you disappointed that there is no ship combat or exploration in Destiny? Or are you relieved it's a ground combat game only. Or are you satisfied with its current ommission, but would hope to see it bought in in an update or sequel?

1 ReplyI definitely think it would interesting to play. But I think a much better place for it would be in a future expansion. Perhaps when we go to the reef where the awoken are. But currently I don't feel like it's any big loss.

1 ReplyIf it gets to the point where you can pilot your ships, I hope they add a PVP mode with the ships involved. Like the space battles from Star Wars: Battlefront 2. It's an old game, I know, but the mode was really fun IMO.

Yeah I agree with you, it would be very cool to fly in your ship in space, maybe add some baddies out there ripe for the killing. It would be awesome.

1 ReplyFirst 9 you get your own ship but the shops are a cool loading screen that's it. My god what would you rather have a blank screen maybe with images and some hints at the bottom. The point of the ship loading screen is to try to make it seem like the game is never reading stopping and to give the illusion of seamless transitions between maps and or game modes. But if you have an issue with it there's still time to cancel your pre order. But that's just my opinion there's no need to go spreading it around.

Maybe bungie will include space battles much further down the line once we've all got abit tired of land-based shooting, who knows? It depends if bungie can keep the current shooting mechanics fresh and interesting for the long-term, and not fall into inane repetition

3 RepliesI don't think it was ever implied you'd be able to fly the ships, you may have inferred that but they didn't imply it. And I don't mind that they aren't flyable, it's just a fun loading screen basically, I'd rather they concentrate on the ground combat, than on the physics of flying and space combat.

8 RepliesThere's no reason why they couldn't add it in later. However, it would be a big project. Although, with how secretive they've been with the aspects of the game up until this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they've already been working on it.

13 RepliesI think it would be great if your ship made a difference, other than looking different maybe have each ship model give a special ability, while ship to ship combat would be epic, especially in PvP, I don't see it happening, you'd have to add an extra engine into a game that's already running a bunch of different engines that have to interact with each other. A bonus from the ship, or a special ability would still be epic though. Treat the ship like a piece of armor and I'd be happy.

14 RepliesThey'll probably add it in a sequel I'd people ask for it. I don't think they ever mentioned piloting a ship, if they did, it was probably in reference to the sparrow. I do agree that having little bird of exploration I the ship would be cool: navigating an asteroid field, infiltrate/fight off an enemy perimeter to get to or unlock a planet. Maybe find and shoot down an enemy satellite, fight off a ship defending it. Pvp dog fights. It could be a great mechanic. Unfortunately, that would take a ton of work, so I doubt we'll see it this time, I'd be hesitant to say that it could even come out in the sequel as a team could be well into working on the sequel now. But maybe we'll see something like that in destiny 3. It would be a very cool and worthwhile mechanic. It's definitely something that would keep me playing after I've beaten the full story campaign.

1 Reply"If you can see it, you can go there." Is a phrase that marketing used to sell the game without actually knowing. It's maps are pretty much just smaller borderlands areas with a hight ceiling. I was hoping that phrase was a comment on the games diverse exploration options, not just hype. I mean they included speeders without races? However it was just the beta and I'll play it and the 2 dlcs but if it doesn't evolve over the ten year plan, I won't be purchasing further.

25 RepliesI think Bungie made the right call, if they bit of more than they could chew we would either end up with a poor flight system and watered down ground combat, or possibly even worse having the game delayed for X number of months.

1 ReplyI don't mind not flying. It would be cool if they implemented a racing mode in the crucible where you can join Sparrow Races or Ship races. But I like the game for what it is in it's current state anyway.

Warframe is getting Archwing while Space sims are getting a new lease on the market with games like Star Citizen ramping up interest as its being developed. I think Bungie and some of their fans are very secure in saying no to anything and everything to their own detriment. Bungie could have led in Space Flight adventuring. Instead it's a elevator ride from Mass Effect so aptly pointed out by another user.

15 RepliesI think for right now its good they didnt put the ship exploration/combat in becuase since its the first game its smart to just show us what Destiny is really about. The ship combat/exploration is just an extra thing.

Before the beta no one knew anything and after the beta everyone should have known there wasn't any ship combat. Pretty simple concept really.

3 RepliesYeah. Ya know I've been wondering.. The whole getting new ships thing seems really pointless when you don't get to fly them. They've been boiled down to interchangeable loading screen. And I have to say. That was something I was excited for when I first started to learn about desteny. I did kinda forget about it though. As more info came out and I really put together what this game was. I did notice they showed less and less of the ships. I honesty can't decide if I'm disappointed about that or not. Doesn't seem to matter at this point. There's also No Man's Sky for that type of game play though. I could have swarn that game was called Nomad Sky when I first heard about it.
