I'm beginning to get very curious about the awoken. Maybe more speculation will make September 9th come faster!
"It is said that the Awoken were born in the Collapse, descended from those who tried to flee its wrath. Something happened to them out on the edge of the deep black, and they were forever changed. Today many Awoken live in the distant Reef, aloof and mysterious. But others returned to Earth, where their descendants now fight for the City. Earthborn Awoken sometimes venture out to the Reef, hoping to learn its secrets — but they find no special welcome from the reclusive Queen."

For humans to visit the city and other possible cities to help defend them. Since at the tower that city is the last "safe" location. For exo is to rebuild space colonies and or expand the safe city.

3 RepliesI predict that much of the Awoken hierarchy remains to be seen. Sure, we as players can select them as a playable race, but what of the race itself? What motivations does this enigmatic Queen have? Is she reclusive because she fears the Darkness, or because she's dealing in the shadows to snuff out the last light? I speculate that, friend or foe, she is not one to be trifled with. You know that old bit that "it's always the quiet ones you have to watch out for"? The current lack of light shed on the Queen and her propensity to "lone wolf it," as it were, leave lots of blanks to be filled in the coming weeks and months. And I bet she's a total babe. But that's just me...

Mutants, but we don't fear or hate them #Humansvsmutiesvsx-men! The Traveler gave everyone gifts. Humans got longer life spans, habitable planets, and knowledge to defend our colonies! Exo are presumably humanities drones to do war, sport, and labor with until the Traveler gave them self awareness or a soul, or something. Certainly wasn't a lighting bolt #Johnnynumberfiveisalive! These Awoken are just Humans mutated by the Traveler. Eh, glow in the dark skin? Maybe they don't eat? Maybe they are solar-powered!

I think if the Traveler turns out to be the benevolent presence it is made out to be at this time then the Darkness corrupted those that fled. If the Traveler turns out to be more sinister then it punished the Awoken for fleeing.

I believe that the Traveler may have, in some way "changed" the Awoken into what they now are, as they fled into the deep black of space, hoping to escape the collapse. Perhaps if the Traveler is, indeed, a sentient Artificially Intelligent being, then maybe what happened to the Awoken was a punishment (and maybe also a constant reminder) of sorts, given to the fleeing humans, by the Traveler, so that they may always know of how they attempted to flee the collapse, perhaps after the Traveler somehow called them to fight against the Darkness.

I imagine if they were born in the collapse, then it wasn't the traveller, because the traveller came before the collapse. It could have been a last minute decision as a back up plan on the travellers part, like the Ghosts were, but we will know in a little more than a week and a half.

3 RepliesHalf of the population fled earth when the darkness arrived and this meant the humans were out of the traveler reach to save them so they were exposed to the darkness. As they fled and were being exposed to the darkness they ended up in the Reef where all of their ships failed and they stayed in the Reef. In this half that was exposed to the darkness some chose to retreat back into the safety of the traveler and then these humans began to reproduce and repopulate some areas of earth as the first awokened humans. Of Course this is just a theory i made up.

Being that they fled away from earth where the traveler is whatever happened to them most likely was caused by the darkness or something affiliated with it. Maybe they will be some kind of spawns of darkness that have to fight our against our nature

questions like this may just be simple. i believe that the awoken came to be due to the normal human race some of there population may have been exposed to some radiation, this then leading them to have babys looking pretty -blam!-ed up, with their skins looking as if its slowly melting. WHO knows

1 ReplyI take the Ghost fragment showing Rasputin warning of an incoming event (solar flare or something, Collapse maybe?), to be what created the Awoken. Omnibus analysis detects deep structure information content (nine sigma) and internal teleonomy." Whatever this event was, it contained matter scrambling goodness (sterile neutrino scattering) and intelligent intent (internal teleonomy), so when these folks were exposed to the event, instead of killing them it transformed them in some way. Just a theory anyways
