I think we are losing sight as to what "competitive" means

A lot of you are complaining about Destiny not being competitive because of no private matches. You are fools. A group of 6 organized players vs another group of 6 organized players is no more competitive than a group of 6 regular players vs 6 regular players. All forms of a Player vs another Player is competitive. Im sorry, but technically, (gotta love technicalities) a clan of 6 is still random. 6 random people form together to make a clan. 6 random people form together to make a clan. They fight each other. No matter how you look at it, everyone can be considered random players. Oh, my clan of 6 vs your clan of 6? Guess what, you dont know the enemy, they are still randoms. Randoms who just formed together. The reason Destiny is labeled Competitive by Bungie is because, the gameplay itself is competitive. Gameplay in games like CoD is shit, but somehow its considered competitive when Two groups of 6 organized players play in a Private match? As compared to two groups of six playing in player match? One is no more competitive than the other. But, back to why Destiny is competitive. Its competitive because the higher level you go, the crazier shit gets. Imagine a lobby of max leveled players (somewhere in 30s?) with legendary/exotic gear with full out skills and abilities fighting? The verticality of super jumping as Hunters or Gliding as Titans/Warlocks, the nova bombs or titan smashes or titan bombs, or golden gun, bladedancer, all being use. Nonetheless the perks of your weapons and armor and self adding in that intense play. The idea of competitive is 30 something vs a lvl 5. That lvl 5 has to majorly compete. I know dmg and armor ratings are turned off for normal crucible; but weapon/armor/self perks are very much enabled. But the verticality will add much more competitive play than your shitty horizontal CoD. Again, a Private match of two 6 player teams is no more competitive than a Player match of two 6 player teams.

Six organized players will usually win against a team with no organization. Just a minor nitpick.

And how do you propose to play against other clans or "organized" team of 6 if theres no way except to randomly be put up against one? I see your points but theres just too much basic things that are needed that aren't in destiny

      • Have you ever played a FPS game? Your statement of a clan is made up of randoms made me spit out my soda. Holy crap.. My clan has been around for more then 8 years. Known the guys on there for more then 12 years. the lasses on there more then 5 years. Clans aren't randoms. New clans are. obviously. But Those pick and play clans will get thrashed by a clan that has more experienced playing together. facing a clan that plays and "trains" together will not be a walk through. Random players are players that don't know each other. some may not use mic. CLAN TEAMS ALL USE MIC. Many are required to. And that's the difference. You can't have a organized team with out communication. And one that has known it's members long enough that they each know there roles with out being told. Or you figure clan members just play willy nilly without roles? You know why Pub stomping happens? even when RANDOM team is all using mics? Cause that clan that just handed them there ass has played that map for the hundredth time together and each player knows what to do to get your asses spawn trapped.

        • Who cares how it's defined? The absence of features is unrelated to the definition of competitive.

            • A very good point. MMO PvP has been competitive for years without private matches. Battlegrounds, arenas, open world PvP, and keep sieges are all very random events. Even trying to schedule those events with other guilds/clans in game does not guarantee that randoms will not interfere. But even with the randomness of MMO PvP, truly skilled players shine through and the competitiveness is always fierce. PvP guilds/clans have always thrived and made names for themselves as top dogs in this environment. All without private matches. People need to stop bringing their cookie cutter FPS mind sets to Destiny. This game was not built to be the next big competitive FPS, it was built to be enjoyed by gamers of all walks of life by gamers who truly understand what it means to have fun in a game. PvE, PvP, it doesn't matter. This game can and will be fun, people just have to stop nitpicking it and relax.

            • Uhhh youre generalising the term competitive a little too much. Counter strike and quake are competitive multiplayer, Halo used to be. CoD, Destiny and now halo are casual multiplayer. Destiny is also Coop

                • The truth is to me is the player it self makes a game competitive if u have a team of 6 vs a team of 6 playing to win a match don't it make a competitive so if it's a 1 v 1 in basket ball and your playing for 50$ don't it make it competitive Yes u can play for fun and still be competitive I just feel ppl make a big deal for some thing so stupid

                      •
Wow, kinda surprising to see a gaming forum so out of touch in what defines a competitive multiplayer experience in today's context. Yes, if you follow the strict definition itself you're going to end up saying that the multiplayer is competitive. However this is not within context. While it's true to the definition, the actual competitive gaming crowd is going to largely disagree with you. Operating by that definition you could call Mario Party 8 a competitive game, and believe me when I say it's a rarity for anyone in the competitive scene to agree to something like that. Because the definition listed is as broad as it is, the competitive community has taken on its own version of that word. Agree with the result or not, they do not operate by the one listed. The things the OP listed all detract from a competitive experience because they all bar incentive to continue, and an incentive to win. One thing he listed bars part of the competition in its entirety. Competitive multiplayers of today's standard supply you with both without holding you back from obtaining those goals. Actually I take that back. They will hold you back in one way and only one way - by the opponent's abilities matched against your own. This is key to the competitive community's view on competition. What results from the match is what drives the player forward to become a better player and receive rewards for eventually being just that. That is in a summarized way, the definition the competitive community abides by. Basically, it's a slang version of the word "competitive." -Teh Puma
Why does it matter what is technically "competitive?" It is a feature that Bungie has done before and people are simply requesting it. They are in their right to do so. Your argument of semantics doesn't change anything. The truth is: YOU don't care about private matches so you are trying to belittle the people who do. Case closed.

                          • You completely missed the point of the custom game argument. The problem isn't 6 randoms vs 6 randoms or 6 clanies vs 6 clanies. The problem is 6 clanies, or obvious premade team vs 6 randoms. The randoms don't stand a chance. That doesn't sound very "competitive" to me.

Not reading your post. It's probably stupid/bait. Competitive just simply means you want to play to win because winning is fun to you. That's what it means to me. If you appose it then you prove everyone has their own definition therefore don't bother changing it.

                              • I don't care either way honestly but there really is no point in bringing up what competitive literally is. Communities have adopted their version. Bungie making the AAA series called halo fully knows what competitive means to the masses. It is obvious that they used the word as a marketing idea to hype for PvP. But like i said i don't care either way. I'm happy for what we are getting.
