Forbes and their terrible reporting

I can't stand Forbes' article on Destiny, and more specifically the writer of this article (Paul Tassi). This is some of the worst journalism I've seen outside of fox news in a long time. To start with, he is lacking in knowledge on the entire game. Bungie has stated you'll be able to carry your characters throughout the entire decade long experience, something he is completely unaware of (even though this information is readily available on a number of forums along with legitimate sources). Next he claims Destiny is an MMO. Regardless of whether you think it is or it isn't, that is an opinion and a point of contention (despite the fact that Bungie has claimed it isn't an MMO). He passes this off as a fact that isn't even remotely debated. The rest of the article is purely his opinion, which is something absolutely any single one of us can give. They're guys on forums more knowledgeable, well spoken, and who are capable of setting their biases aside, than this dipshit. Sorry, I just had to rant. EDIT: he specifically calls Destiny an MMO in his video. At roughly 25-35 seconds in

  • Agreed with all said. However, nobody else found it interesting that FORBES is writing an article on a video game? Good/Bad/or just plain nonsensical writing... A shit-ton of wealthy, wanna-be wealthy, Dr. Office waiting rooms, legal briefing rooms, non-gamers! Etc, now have an article about DESTINY in FORBES to read. Way to go BUNGIE!!! Break The Walls Down Baby! And to the rest of my fellow Guardians, do not allow yourself to feel very upset over the garble that comprises the article. Know that the majority of current Forbes readers are not gamers. What the article might do is prompt the non-gamer who reads Forbes, to maybe ask around about DESTINY at a local retailer....(or a question from a wealthy brother-in-law which will certainly be the case for me "Dude, what's this DESTINY I've been hearing about?"). At that point the knowledgable person can tell the Forbes person how much fun the actual game is. Long/Short,. It builds a larger customer base and spreads more awareness to the masses that may not of picked up on DESTINY through other forms of informational media. Seriously,. When was the last time you bought or didn't buy something based on a Forbes article?..... Meh... Except that time I passed on the G5 acquisition due to Forbes reporting in an earlier issue that the Italian leather used to wrap the conference table chairs... Was in fact leather procured in Canada. No self respecting G5 owner would allow non-Italian leather to touch their ten thousand dollar suit. Even at 30,000 ft. Destiny is not a game purchased or played by separation of economic class.... Who cares what Forbes says,... What matters is they are saying it. It's good for business. O.o,y,,

I'm not expressing any opinion on the article (and to be clear, newbies, I do NOT work for Bungie -- I'm just a community member like you), but I see that some other folks have touched on an important fact and wanted to expand on that more clearly: Forbes is not a journalism website. It is a news aggregator and blog site. Despite the font and official-looking headline, this "article" is actually this guy's blog -- and to be clear, anybody can become a Forbes blogger as long as their application is accepted. Forbes bloggers are paid based on how many clicks their articles get, and they work independently with very little oversight or guidance from Forbes itself. That's why you see lots of clickbaity-type headlines and tons of spelling/grammar errors in these articles. This creates a strong incentive to create inflammatory articles that users pass around forums like these so that everyone clicks on them, and there is no system in place designed to ensure the accuracy or truth of the content. The articles generally reflect some level of expertise in the subject matter, but some bloggers try harder to get traffic than to present well-reasoned opinions. Once again -- I'm not saying that's what this guy is doing at all (in fact, I have not even read the whole article yet), but I think it's important that you not call this "journalism." This is blogging, and some bloggers may be more incentivized to draw traffic to their article than to engage in solid journalism. So take that as you will, but hopefully that provides some perspective here.

      • As an adult I believe it is my duty to point out to you children, that often times, journalists will write something about your toys that you disagree with. This is not bad. This is the cornerstone of the democracy your grandparents (who you will never better) fought for. Stop whining/ranting like brats, put on your big boy pants (or xxl big boy pants for the yanks) & put forward your own articulate views on a medium, once agian provided by adults, you will never match.
or will you?
• Hey, I've been wondering about this for awhile. But the 500M everyone's talking about. Is that what Bungie spent already, or is that their budget for the 10 year projection?

              • It's not written for fans, it's written for investors. They only want to know about "public opinion" and "company direction" so they can use it to monetize. Forbes articles are not meant for you. They are written for people who make money off of the industry.

                • Forbes should stick to reporting on the stock market, and stay away from the gaming industry.

I say they leave the gaming community to the gaming publications... If they plan to add this. They should find someone who actually knows about the gaming community. Amateurs!! :-p

Yes... why is Forbes covering this at all? No one in the financial community worth their salt reads it... unless it's a specific column blog. Their website is a model of futility as well. It's more a political echo chamber than anything. Too bad, old Forbes was great... And Forbes the younger does know what he's talking about.

                  • This is the era of bloggers and bait headlines. EVERY semi-major event in pop-culture will be spun into bullshit articles. Every harmless quote will be turned into an over-the-top headline, and every single time, you'll get to the quote and go... "What the headline implied had NOTHING to do with what he actually said." Clicks, clicks, clicks, people. "Keywords" beat "content" and this trend has been coming for a while (Thanks, BuzzFeed!).

Well it IS massive, It's multiplayer, and it's online. Also, want to add that I've been reading Tassi's coverage for last six months. His work is better than most gaming websites out there as they are too busy licking the boots of the developers. His coverage also considers the business aspect of the product.

                  • I'd say he hit the nail on the head about it being a beautiful but empty world. It's why I felt bored eight hours into the beta just "shooting aliens in the face" as he puts it. And he did not call Destiny an MMO. He said "that Destiny should consider viewing itself fully as an MMO, rather than a shooter series with MMO elements. I think they may be on that path, judging by how hardcore they’re going with raids, but I’m still not sure how things will play out when it comes to sequels." He was talking about what they should do for a focus with the $500m budget that Activision has slated for the game. He doesn't feel all the money was spent already. Move toward an MMO style game instead of beautiful but empty world shooter. And more story and side quests or mini games as evidently the Grimoire cards do little to add in depth to the world of Destiny, mostly they focus on skill trees and weapons. Do something to help liven up the world of Destiny.

I agree with him about the lack of activity in the worlds. Makes me wonder just what the sandbox team has actually been doing with its time. Because right now it seems to be 'Alright, let's test Mothyards out with this beacon slightly to the left. We got any other way of saying 'Kill this many enemies'?'

                    •
The rest of the article is purely his opinion, which is something absolutely any single one of us can give.
Perhaps that's what they call an opinion piece? Also, most of the article I read was true.....so i don't know why you are getting so angry over an article. Sure he missed the fact that characters transfer over, but big deal. He never said they won't, he was simply speculating on how it might work. Also, this article is not going to change the game or experience you have playing it....so calm down?

                      • The biggest lulz moment: when he contemplates whether characters will carry over into the sequels. We've known the answer to this for months at least.
