Destiny's story criticism

While I don't agree with the whole article, it raises good points. I know I only got to play the beta, and so some cutscenes may have been omitted, but the pacing of the story so far isn't great. I've been dead for god knows how long, and just escaped a bunch of angry alien pirates, and all that's really explained afterwards is that this tower is a base and that I need to go out again and get a warp drive. The fallen's motivations, humanities history, the guardians and the city are all explained in grimoire or background dialogue, and it all seems rushed and awkward. Another cutscene or so to explain the history of what happened, to actually show some of the citizens of the city, to be introduced by the Vanguard Mentors and told by duty now would help build up atmosphere and the story. Also some explanation for why I am killing the fallen and hive, not just from dinklebot in the background (which is easy to miss if you're dicking around with friends), but from the Mentors (who so far just stand by a table all day), or better, one of the Archons. What do you guys think?

Raids, I think, will be a major part of the game. It will most likely be just as big, if not bigger, than the story. The expansions will also continue the story. They have plenty of room to keep the story going for quite some time.

      • agreed, i would have like some more actual dialog, etc and reasons for missions not just random go here kill this 15 min missions. Each mission had some purpose, but little story - we need a ship, we need a hyper drive to get here, we need to turn on a beacon to get to other planets. here's a sparrow etc.

      • I agree. Some additional cutscenes prior to your resurrection via the Ghost or upon your arrival at the Tower to explain more of the background would be extremely beneficial. If you as a developer want me invested in what's going on in a game, I need a compelling story to achieve that. If I read a book (or book series) and become very attached to its characters, themes, lore, etc. it's because the author has done an excellent job of stimulating my imagination and making the story feel like it's something I can connect to and like it's worth spending my time on. The principle remains the same in gaming. Bungie, I'm your reader and you are the author. It's up to your storytelling abilities to entice me to invest my time.

        • Yeh the game needs some serious story help. I can't imagine how they didn't figure this out themselves. Bungies usually pretty good with the story

          • I feel like the storytelling may be "streamlined" because of the MMO-esque always-online nature of the game, to get players into the action even faster. Mass Effect had its own in-game reference material to enrich and add detail to the world and I think the Grimoire is going to fill a similar roll. Though, maybe, it'll be used to fill in blanks rather than just adding detail, which would be kind of unfortunate. I can't say what the game will feel like to the average person. I'm too interested in everything to not be excited about going through the Grimoire as it fills up or trying to glean information out of bits and peices of dialogue random NPC's may say. I have a feeling I'll understand what's going on but that may not be the case for everyone who isn't willing to put in the work.
Not really , Game Informer are a bunch of pompous asshats who are full of shit and about as bad as IGN in their hypocrisy . the beta was meant to tease a tiny bit to us and little more , and bungie has told us over and over again that they want to keep as much of the game a secret from us until we play destiny next month .

                • I don't get why some people are so lost with Halo's story at times. Like that bit about the silent cartographer. It's explained in game that it's a name the Covenant use, and Cortana further clarifies that it's a map room. Silent in that it does not speak, Cartographer in that it's a map. And Guilty Spark was called Guilty Spark because that's just his name. I also have a name, it's Robert, for some dumb reason. If the writer's complaints about Halo are anything to go by, he's just being deliberately disingenuous. While I agree Destiny could use some more explanation (and hell, even Bungie's Halo explained -blam!- all about the overall plot) but I still followed it enough to get by on the assumption that a lot of the mysteries would be explained further in the game.

                • While imo the darkness sounds like a giant cliché and is incredibly vague, this article was atrocious. The demanding to be spoonfed all information is sickening and really shows that the author doesn't care and isn't open to experience. Also I cringed at the "these names are too hard what's a guilty spark is that a name?" like why was that even a section?

I think I'll wait for the full release to decide. I cannot stand game sites that criticize a game over a beta when they should know more than most that it's not a final or full version. I think it's horrible reporting. I think you are good for recognizing that it's a beta at least and the possibility of story being omitted.

Did you ever play Halo? It also has no backstory whatsoever in-game (though it is implied that the Chief knows what is going on). All you get is that some collection of aliens are at war with mankind and you just jumped out of warp space with them following. In Destiny you wake up after being dead for awhile. I'd presume you died during the fall - perhaps you were killed by fallen. The Ghost implies you will probably be surprised by the overall state of things, but I'd assume your character is already familiar with all 4 alien races at a minimum. I also wouldn't expect your guardian to have any more personality or dialogue than the Chief. Destiny's method of story telling so far implies that you are one of hundreds/thousands/millions of guardians who will assist in pushing back the darkness - your own guardian is never going to be special or elevated above other guardians for plot purposes. It's not at all a character driven narrative (I agree all the Tower NPCs may as well be vending machines for all the personality and dialogue they have). It also has much more of a fairy tale vibe to it's story telling, compared to Halo's 80's B-grade action flick style.

                          • There even is a story to criticize? We supposedly played 1/4th to 1/5th of the story missions and there was none. But a nonexistent or redundant story is just another MMO trope they picked up and was never the reason I'm gonna pick up the game.

The game we played was a beta, it simply can't be used to judge the entire game. Anyone foolish enough to make such a illogical leap doesn't deserve to be taken seriously.

You get to raid his vault in the game. The story hasn't been expanded on, and that was done on purpose. This isn't mass effect, skyrim, or borderlands. It's a new game with a new story that we have not played yet. If you can't follow the story, go back to COD.

As an aside to the main points of this discussion, I couldn't disagree with him more about Bungie using interesting words to name characters etc. Did you ever notice that in-game, not a single Covenant character is ever named by their actual (alien) name? They all use titles instead. Why? Because Truth is infinitely easier to remember and say than Ord Casto (or the Arbiter and Thel'Vadum). Interestingly, this is something that 343, in it's effort to make the Halo universe a much more serious place, has thrown right out the window. Now we have Elite 'terrorist' Parg Vol and the like to contend with (I have to admit I burst out laughing the first time I heard the name and the 'terrorist' title for him).

                                    • Generally, I think the author of that post is not a veteran FPS gamer. Yeah, sure - Destiny dumped a lot of information on you at once. Yeah, sure, I heard the exposition as I was lining up my headshots and throwing grenades. However, there was never a point in the beginning of Destiny where I felt like I was 'in trouble'. If you're used to playing FPS, then you're going through the motions in the first parts of the game. Learning your button layout and weapon capabilities. But you're not struggling to make it through the level. And while you're mostly on autopilot (because, let's face it, if you're over about 20, you've probably gone through 30-40 new FPS games and learned them), one ear is listening to the Ghost tell the beginning story. On the other hand, if you struggle to find a headshot, you're not sure what the word 'cover' means, or you aren't sure when to throw your grenade and when to save it - you may have problems like the author of that post. The answers were, for the most part, there in the Beta, but if you're too distracted because you're still working out the mechanics of FPS gaming - there's nothing that's going to help you. I can't think of an FPS game, off the top of my head, that sits you down for a half-hour study session to talk about the state of the world. Shooters are action games, and they put you in that action straight off. So my conclusion isn't that the beginning of Destiny is bad. It's that the author of that post is not an FPS gamer, and they need to learn the gameplay mechanics a little more before they start writing reviews on it. Having said that -- There's a lot of unexplained points in Destiny's lore - but nothing on the level I'd call a 'plot hole' just yet. For instance - if the Moon was terraformed by the Traveler before the Hive invaded, why do the dead humans have space suits on? Why does it appear that the Traveler didn't warn humanity about the Darkness? Why, if the Traveler had battled this 'ancient enemy' before, didn't it create the Guardians when it arrived on Earth and militarized the entire planet to withstand the Darkness' assault? These are the questions that the author should be asking if he's reflecting on Destiny's plot at all... not, 'Well, the Ghost was talking while there was enemies and stuff, so I didn't understand what was going on." That's barely a critique.
