Severe oversight in Destiny's social matchmaking

I heard about the Iron Banner event and figured I'd give it a shot. Firing up the Beta, I hovered over the event, and locked in my place. I did this alone, without a fireteam. I had no idea that I'd be punished for playing with other random gamers. Hooking up my headset, I realized there was no banter or chatter. I thought that was a bit strange, but I continued to communicate with players regardless, spotting out enemies and the like. Little did I know that this was falling on deaf ears: it appears you can't communicate with anyone who's not in your "fireteam". In a gametype like Control, communication is key. If you don't have communication you're running around and providing easy kills for gamers who ARE coordinated. In essence, you're just re-spawning kill fodder. Suffice it to say after four consecutive games where I couldn't talk to anyone, I realized something was wrong. So I took to Twitter and found a few others who were having the same problem. We're all getting punished for not making a pre-formed fireteam. Way back in 2013, Bungie said that gamers could only chat with players in their fireteam. http://gamingprobe.com/2013/12/18/destiny-multiplayer-details-health-maps-voice-chat-team-sizes-playlists/ But hang on. Why is there a discrepancy between your fireteam and your actual multiplayer team? Why do we need to take a minute to invite these players to a PSN party (where a lot of them will ignore the invite anyway)? Is this how multiplayer games are supposed to be? Share your frustration with this severe oversight so that we can get Bungie to fix this and stop giving other players the upper-hand because they have more PSN friends. I hope to see that this isn't implemented in the final version or people will be severely disappointed. Furthermore I'm not sure how this has been looked over...this is the kind of thing Bungie needs to know we're not happy about.

  • The lack of in game chat is especially concerning for those playing on ps4 or xbox one where there might not be that many friends available. Also even if you were on an older console, you can't expect every person to have 6 friends available and willing to play the same game as them every time one person feels like playing said game. It just seems like an unrealistic scenario in the real world and personally it doesn't make any sense to me as it defeats the purpose of a truly connected gaming experience by severely limiting the amount of time someone is able to play the game the way that it was meant to be played.
