Sunsinger: An attempt to understand

As light is shined on the all of the subclasses, the Warlock sunsinger remains the most mysterious. WE know full well the purpose of the Defender's shields, and have been shown many time the destructive force of the Bladedancer's ArcBlade, However what is it exactly that Radiance will do for the space-mages? Shown here is all of the Sunsingers abilities(Thanks to andrewBD for his post):

WARLOCK - SUNSINGER: "There are flames that even the Darkness cannot exinguish." SOLAR GRENADE - A grenade hat creates a flare of Solar Light which continually damages enemies trapped inside. FIREBOLT GRENADE - A grenade that unleashed bolts of Solar Light at nearby enemies. FUSION GRENADE - An explosive grenade that causes bonus damage when attached to its targets. GLIDE improves to IMPROVED GLIDE as opposed to BLINK. RADIANCE (SUPER) - Fill yourself with Solar Light, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of all your abilities. SONG OF FLAME - While active, Radiance reduses all cooldowns for nearby allies. RADIANT SKIN - While active, Radiance reduces incoming damage. FIREBORN - Radiance can now be activated from beyond the grave. Doing so returns you to life. SCORCH (MELEE) - A powerful melee attack that ignites enemies, causing damage over time. FLAME SHIELD - Killing an enemy with Scorch reduces incoming damage for a short time. SOLAR WIND - Hitting an enemy with Scorch knocks them back. BRIMSTONE - Killing enemies with Scorch causes them to explode. ARCANCE I - III & ANCESTRAL/CHAOS/DIVINE RADIANT WILL - Increases the duration of Radiance. VIKING FUNERAL - Enemies you ignite burn longer and take more damage. SUNBURST - Killing an enemy with Scorch has a chance to generate Orbs of Light. TOUCH OF FLAME - All grenades ignite enemies, causing damage over time. ANGEL OF LIGHT - Aiming your weapon while in the air will hold you in place for a short time. GIFT OF THE SUN - Gain an additional grenade. ILLUMINATION - Seals previous choices and grants Recovery bonus.

Datto has also done a video that explains all of the abilities of the sunsinger (though not to anymore depth than what can be gathered here)(Thank you Dassembre for bringing this to my attemntion) From what we can tell, the sunsinger has a lot of focus on solar damage, specifically setting enemies on fire. with the lack of a vortex grenade and fast grenade charge times, This subclass will lack much of the crowd control that the voidwalker is prominent in. We can gather that this subclass can fill the role of a glass cannon or DPS, or be a very good support, however there is one crucial bit of evidence we need to affirm this speculation, and that is the exact function of Radiance. Just as it says, radiance will dramatically increase the effectiveness of all of our abilities. However, what exactly does this mean? By all abilities, do they just mean our grenades and melee? Does this mean that every single armor/speed/regen boost we've chosen will be highly increased whenever in radiance? Will this cause abilities such as viking funeral, which already buff previous abilities, to buff them even more? I doubt this one will be true, but will it also boost the upgrades and abilities on our equipment, making our choice in gear all the more essential when running sunsinger? I feel as though sunsinger can not be properly appreciated (or depreciated) until we actually get to see one in action, which, as of now, has not happened. The only bits of sunsinger we have seen is the activation of radiance and the locked skilltree in the beta menu. It would really help if we knew exactly what abilities were improved, so an idea of how this class can be played can be formulated. Any thoughts or speculations? EDIT: Aside from the Song of Flame ability, the sunsinger appears to have no supportive abilities. It does not seem to be a buffing class in the slightest, meaning that as of now, Destiny lack a good Buffing and/or healing role. EDIT 2:Thanks to Melbolgia for pointing this out. With higher level and more exotic gear, there are many items that grant stats and bonuses, and some of these may alter or add onto our current abilities to make them more supportive. There are even items that cant give you entire skills, meaning you can have 2 of the different super upgrades whereas you would normally only be able to have one. We may have to rely on certain items or gearsets to role sunsinger a certain way. Which given Bungies emphasis on us doing certain things to obtain certain swag, may very well be their intention. These items show some of the ways in our gear choice may drastically effect the way ALL classes can be played (Thanks goes to Macington for providing the links) item 1 item 2 EDIT 3: Thanks again goes to Macington for this one. Listed under ability medals, there is "Medic!", which is obtained by quickly reviving 2 allies, as well as "Angel of Light" - In a single life, revive 5 downed allies. This might mean that Sunsinger may indeed possess the ability to revive others through the use of radiance. This certainly needs more clarification. (Although it does not specify exactly which subclass can do this, so we cant be 100% sure. If not Sunsinger, then who can do this?) (This may have been discredited with the release of the Crucible multiplayer trailer. Several gametypes were shown with with reviving teammates as being a part of them. The medal may have been under the wrong category) EDIT 4: In the new competitive multiplayer trailer. at about 1:25, There is what appears to be a warlock hovering in midair for a split second, and then dropping down after firing their rocket. This could be the Angel Of Light ability in action. There also appears to be an orange-ish aura around the player, perhaps an identifier of somebody using the ability?). Thank you as well to Kempolazer. The new trailer also shows what appears to be fireborn in action. At about 20 seconds in, you see the player ROOK be killed. However, whe next scene he is shown back alive in the same spot, with a golden glow around him and giant wings of light on his back. His shields and health were refilled to max, and he seemed to stay in radiance after revival. This is very important for the ability. EDIT 5: In this new gameplay video from Gamescom, we get to finally see the sunsinger in some real action. At about 12 seconds in, you see a warlock explode with a burst of solar light, activating radiance. They then throw what im guessing is a grenade. Finally, we see an enemy pike with full health and shields come into view, only to be completely destroyed by a single melee strike from the Sunsinger. Although we don't know how this warlock was spec'd out, we can say for certain that a sunsinger in radiance is beyond powerful. You definitely don't want to be near one of these angels of death when they start glowing..

Some notes: Warlocks do not lose the vortex grenade, it simply changes names. The Solar grenade has the same description as the Vortex. For the ability itself, I imagine it has to do with shortening your own cooldowns as well as making the abilities actually stronger. This is all unknown and will probably remain unknown until release, so it's hard to guess the full power of radiance. I would guess that radiance would stack on top of other buffs such as Viking Funeral. But overall, sunsinger is very much so a SELF-buffer, first and foremost, with the ability to help others as well to a smaller degree. I disagree with the Medic! medal being related to Warlock, as if you look at the other options each super has one and only one medal associated with it. The sunsinger has scorched earth, which is to kill three enemies with grenades, which is also what I believe this super will become entirely about, spamming grenades. You should have lower cooldowns, greater power, as well as two grenades (with gift of the sun) allowing for a LOT of AoE grenades to be chucked down range causing a LOT of damage. It could easily deserve the name scorched earth. The other reason I disagree with medic is its wording is similar to that of kill streak medals such as triple down, to quickly kill three enemies. You don't need to kill all three at once to actually earn it, so it stands to reason that if you revive two people who are near each other that would earn you the medal. There have been modes confirmed with reviving being a possibility, so its more a mode dependent medal than a class dependent. So overall, Radiance appears to be a self buffer that increases offensive capabilities, primarily for grenades, but also for the melee as well should anyone be close. Radiant skin allows this buff to apply to defense as well making it quite a force to be reckoned with.

    • In the new multiplayer trailer, there is a game mode (I think it's called skirmish?) It's small teams, 3v3, and you can revive teammates. Therefore the 5 revives in on life can be achieved by any class.

    • There's a crucible game mode where you can revive fallen comrades, this is what the "medic" medal is referring to I'm pretty sure

      • Honestly, this class seems to be more along the lines of a BattleMage/Buffer from the abilities. The super makes all of its other skills improved? The super buffs allies with varying effects? Makes you more efficient at combat?

          • The ability to revive yourself and then run around reviving others is a method of wipe prevention. It is one of THE most important insurance plans during a raid if all your members die. Did you ever notice how when the last person in your fire team dies, you get a 3 second countdown before the encounter resets and respawns your whole team back to the previous save point? That counter is when you pop radiance, then run around reviving as many team members as you can. You are essentially the "battle-rez" option. You skip over healing entirely and are now the teams' savior. I have my own theories about Titan Defender shields and what kind of mechanics bosses will deploy in order to kill the entire team. Rest assured YOUR TEAM WILL DIE. Now if you have a sunsinger in your fireteam, you have a means of continuing the battle even after your whole team is dead. That, alone, is probably the main function of the super. The benefits of added damage / protection is just a means of allowing you to rez people under fire or kill an immediate threat upon rezzing. I'm sure there will be times when "boosted" damage might come in handy to seal the deal, but radiance is primarily an "oh shit we are about to lose in 3... 2.." sands of time rewind style button. It will be a pivotal role sought out in group comps on content that is not considered on "farm" status.

One of my favorite things right now in destiny is the exotic equipment, which works in ways you may not expect. You say that the warlock may not have healing abilities but there is a helmet that can increase the rate you revive players and the rate they revive you. One of my favorite armors is the dark souls chest armor, which further decreases cool down while radiance is active. If this were combined with the ability that reduces the cool down of your allies abilities you could get a combined effect :)

Basically sounds like a more support-based version of Voidwalker. Can't wait to try it out.

                • I don't know if I'd consider this subclass to be a glass cannon. It has a few abilities like Radiant Skin and Flame Shield which grants damage reduction. To me this subclass seems like a berserk style class, running around and doing a lot of flame DoT. Reminds me a lot of Krieg's Hellborn tree from Borderlands 2, which was my favorite skill tree in that game. The one thing Sunsinger is missing imo is an ability that grants healing proportionate to flame DoT being done to enemies. That's just me.

                    • Sunsinger is more oriented for support by the way i look at it. A lot of these hits are DoTs so I guess you can use those to save friendly ammunition. Radiance is kinda like the emergency pop and should be use when a wipe is about to happen. ^ This is why I'll try to get a balanced raid group

                        • Radiance will make all the OTHER abilities you have selected when it is activated more powerful. Abilities in your build that do damage will do MORE damage. Abilities that reduce damage will reduce damage even further. It is a potentially more powerful Super than Nova Bomb...it is just more subtle. Because the more powerful you are as a character---and the more powerful your abilities are---the more impact activating Radiance will have. Making the Warlock potentially extremely dangerous...and not just dangerous with one ability or one damage class (Void damage) like the Nova Bomb/Golden Gun/FoH. Bungie didn't design ANY of its subclasses to fall neatly into the "Holy Trinity" of RPG games (Tank, DPS, Support/Healer). All of the subclasses are designed to be able to function in all three roles, so you are not rigidly limited in how you play and who you can play with. But in the SunSinger subclass, Fireborn has the possibility to be HUGE to a fireteam. Possibly being the difference between saving a Strike or Raid that is going badly....and having to start over.

                          • No subclasses are glass cannons. You will have to max out agility and recovery on ANY subclass to get armor as low as possible. Then you would have a glass cannon. Can be done on every class, but harder with titan as the lock in subclass grants only armor.

Scorched Earth - Kill 3 Enemies with grenades while Radiance is active
