Sexism in MY Destiny? Its less/more likely than you think.
I'm prepared for the hate. Its going to happen, I'm going to be called a sexist by some people. They'll be no reason to do so, but no doubt it will happen.
There seem to be a rising trend amount of posts about females. About how some of them do play Destiny, or who some features of the games should be made more female like. Ghosts should have a female voice etc, etc.
Why? I don't know. People say that being a Girl Gamer isn't a big deal. That we should be respectful, [i]that we should tolerate them[/i]. Someone said that to me. But, plot twist, it is a big deal. Its mainly dominated by guys, females are few and far between online. So when one of em makes a new topic saying 'Omg I lieks destY' We jump on it like dogs onto meat.
So, Girl Gamers hold loads of power here. People see a girl online and they tend to become one of three things.
1) Mr Chat up Line,
2) The White Knight,
3) Sexist.
Mr Chat up Line pulls out all the stops, showering her in online love. He pulls the classic "Hey baby, I hold X to pick up my weapons. Does that work on you?". Its the 2nd saddest thing alive. Whats the first?
The White Knight. The one the girls cling to in the storm, or so he dreams. Basically Mr Chat up Line, but he tries to pick them up by being 'A nice guy'. He shows this by going ape s**t and ranting about sexism and true love.
Sexists. Yeah. Do we really need to insult these guys? Idiots. The lot of em. "Go make a Sandwhich". Is the most used insult. He should probably ask his mum to make him one. Too bad she doesn't love him.
As someone with Female friends, and two teenage sisters, Girls do not need defending for online. Holy s**t girl gamers can go bat s**t crazy. Its stupid how quick they get chuck out the insults. If anything, we need protection from them.
So girls make guys go Ape S**t online. Maybe love at first lobby sight, or maybe out of pure fear.
So, when one of them posts a topic about them being a female gamer, most people go into one the above forms. This leaves some of us to watch from a distance. Upset and ashamed to be part of the same gender.
So why does this matter? For a start, maybe we should start not caring if someones a Girl Gamer. Yes, it makes them hot. But its ruining these forums. Okay, bit over the top but you get the point.
I saw a topic about how the Ghost should have a female option. What? WHAT? So, if you're a girl, you should a female companion? Someone said it was [i]sexist that there wasn't the option for it[/i].
Bungie, of all companies, isn't sexist. Its stupid. There is no need for it. Its a male voice actor, not because Bungie hate female gamers.
So, my female counterparts, can we stop?

Both sexes are guilty, and all of is disgusting to me. I have never experienced any harmful or derogatory sexism that is noteworthy in online games. Of course people did insult me for my gender, but it never really bothered me because I knew that they never really meant any of it; its just part of the trash talking culture prevalent in many multilayer games. They just want to get under your skin, and I don't let them. So am I saying that real sexism never happens? Of course not, I'm just saying that it does not appear to be the mammoth issue that everyone keeps trying to make it out to be. Honestly, if there is one thing that does bother me about being a girl gamer, its that I either receive sympathy for some injustice that is assumed to have occurred, or that they look to me for my "unique" feminine perspective on gaming. I have time for neither, I'd rather be playing a game. Everyone needs to remember why we play games in the first place: for fun. Leave your politics at the door.

That's the thing...its not sexism just in destiny...or video games...its in life as a whole. Until we, as a race, become united...until we can look past the barriers of nation, creed, sex, color, age, sexual orientation, etc...until we can see each other as brothers and sisters...then we will know hate. Alas, my friend, I don't think it will happen in my lifetime. One can dream though.

I love playing with female gamers (well some of them depends on there personality) it lightens up the atmosphere but then again (this goes for everybody) if your garbage all the time lol I'm probably not going to play with you again.

1 ReplyThe only part of the phrase "girl gamer" that matters to me is "gamer". I don't care what your gender is, because I won't be seeing your face in-game. And if we're using voice-chat, chances are you won't need to clarify your gender unless you're either a ridiculously masculine female or a ridiculously feminine male. Even if you're in a relationship with someone, there's still absolutely no reason to make a big deal about it. As someone else aptly stated, the conversation should go like this: "I'm a girl who plays games." "Cool." End of conversation.

Not going to lie...... I wouldn't have minded the option for a female voiced ghost..... but I realise that its simply easier to do one voice over that two. Or even a more androgynous one.... all digitally amorphous and what not.

Funny enough, on the flip side I'd argue that I tend to avoid female gamers. Because they spend so much time "defending" their honor and proving their skills that it seems like they all have a chip on their shoulders. Like they have something to prove. So it doesn't jive well with laid-back approach to gaming.

I like anyone who takes up a challenge in video games. Especially girls. I have much respect for them. If you can think, hold your own, and be a team player all at once then that's enough for me as a gamer

8 RepliesMisogyny is the bigger issue and that is still alive and well in online games. Same goes for bigotry towards minorities and homosexuals (both the casual use of bigoted words and the full blown vitriolic insults). If you avoid these issues you will make online gaming a more welcoming place for everyone and we can all enjoy games like Destiny. Just follow Wil Wheaton's Law, "Don't Be A Dick."

Anyway, since you cant realy tell when someone is a female or a male on the internets (unless its in said voice chat) were all equal, and there being girl gamers arent a big deal (well, at least not a bigger deal then the existance of females in general).
