A Theory about the Darkness
I'm not sure if there is any explanation about the Darkness that is chasing the Traveler so far, but I have an idea about how the Darkness came to be.
I think the Traveler was looking for a perfect race to uplift - one that can spread life to the rest of the galaxy. We are that perfect race, which is why the Traveler decided to stay and defend us from the Darkness. As we have seen so far, multiple races are part of the Darkness, including the Hive and the Fallen. I think the Traveler visited the homeworlds of the Hive and Fallen, seeing if they had the capability to be a perfect species. The Fallen was too brutal a race to work, and as far as I can tell, not a single being in the Hive has free will, possibly relying on a queen, similar to insect species. When the Traveler noticed their brutality and inability to be a perfect race, it left to find a new species to attempt to uplift - humans. As with us, the Fallen and Hive has based a religion around the Traveler. When it left, they decided to hunt it down and destroy it for betraying them. When they discovered that the Traveler had uplifted us and has seen us as a perfect candidate, the previous candidates wanted to destroy humanity. That's what caused the end of the Golden Age.

If you read up on then you'll noticed that they too had a "golden age" & a collapse. No idea what cause the collapse but i think it had to do something with the Traveler (maybe they became violent towards it). Fallen also don't only fight against humans but Hive as well which doesn't make any sense unless the Fallen have a different goal. The Hive work with the Darkness & only want to destroy the Traveler. I think the Fallen are trying to reclaim the Traveler back from humanity so their civilization can be restored again. Their hate towards humans obviously comes from the fact that they think the Traveler favors humans over them. Also something I think that's worth mentioning is if you look at the very cryptic Grimoire card The Darkness you can make out a few key things. I'll post a small snippet: "V113NNI070XMX001 SECRET HADAL INSTANT AI-COM/RSPN: SOLSECCENT//SxISR//DEEPSPACE CONTACT CONTACT CONTACT TRANSIENT. NULLSOURCE. NULLTYPE. This is a SKYSHOCK ALERT. Multiple distributed ISR assets report a TRANSIENT NEAR EXTRASOLAR EVENT. Event duration ZERO POINT THREE SECONDS." In this you can see the AI/Warmind Rasputin (RSPN) being alerted of The Darkness's coming to earth & a lot of multiple something's traveling with it which I think are the Hive. I don't know haha I know I was all over the place with this so hopefully it makes sense.
