Is the Story a Little... Lacking at the Moment?

Note first that this is meant entirely to see what everyone thinks of the storytelling and plot we've seen thus far in the beta. I realize it is such and changes may well already be implemented in the full game. While I haven't progressed very far through the story yet, I feel it lacks some true storytelling and direction in what you're supposed to be doing. It felt awkward being this strangely resurrected person who simply shows up at the Tower, is given some equipment, and told to go fight stuff. Yet no one, no NPC, seems to think anything about it. To me, it felt as if I was just another bullet shield they scrounged up from somewhere. I understand much of this game is geared towards free roam and exploration. I have no problem with that (Been a hardcore Bethesda/Elder Scrolls/Fallout fan for over a decade). But for the actual story... Shouldn't the arrival of a new guardian be something humanity celebrates? Not that I'm trying to be narcissistic or anything, but the importance of your character just seems very downplayed at the beginning. It seems to lack the urgency of the situation and the pivotal role your guardian has in the fight against the Darkness. I would think for a truly epic storyline, Destiny would want a higher focus on your importance and role you are supposed to play as a guardian. Something in the storytelling that resembles great openings, cinematics, and dialogue in games such as the Elder Scrolls, Halo, Fable, or Assassin's Creed. Something that tells you, "Hey! You're going to be our greatest weapon against the Darkness! We need you--fight for us!". Giving players the feeling that their role in the story is crucial is what makes a game's story so great. It puts us at the helm of the ship and makes us the leader. It makes us aware that our actions are what drive the story and, in this case, bring about the awakening of the Traveler and saving of the human race. And it helps give the story the sense of urgency it needs to be compelling. And maybe the actual story on 9/9 will do just that. Maybe cinematics have been skipped and parts of the story to be told at the beginning are being closely held by the master loremakers at Bungie. I for one, hope that's the case. Because to feel invested in a story, guidance in the story and an emphasis on the importance of the player character must be a priority. Bungie has been great at this in the past. They did it across multiple games with Master Chief. Heck they somehow made you feel important as a nobody ODST and deathly silent Spartan III in those games as well. So I have faith Bungie will deliver again, but hopefully the feeling that my character lacks importance in the story of Destiny is something that I can simply dismiss as "it's just a beta". So now that I've finished my little monologue, what are your thoughts on the story thus far of Destiny? Did it seem to lack features that make a story plot compelling? Or did it seem to be well organized, placing emphasis on points that will be crucial to maintaining interest in the newly-born lore of the Destiny universe? Or am I just over-analyzing and need to wait to see more of the story? Post your thoughts here about what we've seen so far and any story-related suggestions you have for Bungie. Thanks!
