Exo, Awoken or human? What's the point Bungie

EDIT: in the following I have given the impression that I dislike customization. This is untrue. The point that I would like to more strongly point at is as follows: I would like the back story of the races to flower. Or to have a special awakening for each race. To at the very least have some NPCs address you differently. To be proud of being exo rater than just ignoring it which is what the game does so far. My wording was confusing and pointed in the wrong direction I apologize EDIT: I also mention buffs you can ignore them if you disagree. It was just an example. this is not an all or nothing post just a list of possible things that could change. Why is there more than one race? What is the point of having all three races when this has no impact on the game. The only difference is aesthetic. First of all, to those who like the aesthetic variation, it is almost pointless. And this is why: the only time your face/ race is shown, is at the tower, which occupies probably about 5 mins out of hours of gameplay. So why show off when this is such a small part of the game? Secondly, there are no race abilities, none at all. You can't tell me a Exo Titan couldn't be a little stronger? Or a awoken hunter have higher agility? Or a human warlock have higher restoration? Why can't each race have one buff? Thirdly, no race specific quests. Maybe the beginning should be different, where we at least wake up in different places depending on race. Or maybe a couple of race specific exploration quests. There is no difference in the races so why do they matter at all? Why are they a part of this game is they are purely aesthetic? There is so much creativity in them, history and lore supporting them, but that spark of imagination is simply snuffed out when you find that race has no impact on the game..

  • I can see your point, like for humans, they have an affinity towards fire, and let's say recovery the recovery stat, awoken towards void and agility, EXO towards arc and armor. If your character has an affinity to that subclass then their abilities charge faster while playing that subclass. For instance taking 5 seconds off the melee and grenade charge and 20 seconds off of the super charge. Or they'd be more effective against enemies with that elemental armor take less damage from that element but more from the others. That would still balance out fairly well, it would keep all things the same unless you want to sacrifice some things fore some gains.

  • It was cut out. There was supposed to be a different starting point for each race. I would paste something but I'm getting the "Body needs to be more than 2 characters" error

  • So not sure if this was brought up by anyone, but there are racial back stories you unlock in your Grimmoire. It gives you a short history of each race and how they came to be. Basically humans originate on earth and view themselves and their world as being chosen by the Traveler, so they try to live up to that legacy. Awakened are descended from those who tried to escape the Collapse by retreating to the edge of space, but something happened to them in the deep black and they were forever changed. Most are aloof and mysterious, while others have returned to Earth to fight for the city. Exo are complex self aware war machines created to fight off the darkness as a last ditch effort. Some serve basic roles around the city, while others are reforged in the Traveler's light and serve as Guardians. Their inner workings are so complex only a ghost can understand them. Hope this helps!

  • I did like the idea of racial perks. And too be honest they could have been done in a way that wouldn't wreck game play or ruin balance. Lots of games incorporate this with no problems. But same same it ain't there and I got one of all three. Think my exo hunter looks the most boss. So why not? Beats having three characters you can't even tell apart.

You see, in the last level, there will be a vault with loot inside. The most extraordinarily rare loot. Probably half an eight of a Twinkie, too. There will be three vaults: one human vault, which you can only gain access to by doing a human dance, an awoken vault, which you can only gain access to by doing an awoken dance, and an exo vault, which you can only gain access to by sacrificing a Mexican immigrant.

      • It's purely aesthetic because like guardians were all dead at one point so it's only natural that the ghost revived you with the same default status as the other races in you class or whatever. In many games where the race impacts gameplay as much as the class, you start to form a meta. If exo titans are tankier than awoken titans ten everyone would frown on you for being an awoken Titan just because you like the look and class. I feel by not adding that level of depth in the character building they have made the game easier to balance and have fun with.

          • I see what you're saying OP but remember it's a beta. There could be cut scenes missing from what we've seen so far that explain the races. Or maybe a mission later on explains more. It's like the scene where your ghost first wakes you and your guardian doesn't react at all. "Oh humanity is destroyed? What's been going on?". I'm confident Bungie will have all things explained at some point.

          • The answer is roleplaying. There is no other reason other than it's nifty. Enjoy frivolous things once in awhile.

          • We have but a smalllll bit of destiny's lore. We have to go and figure out this universe. What you want may very well be featured in the full release. Plus, even if its just cosmetic, we shouldnt complain about the little things that bungie added to the game to make it just a little more special. After all, the whole picture is just the sum of its parts. (Example: Ive heard people say about the loading screen with the space ship, "This is cool and everything...but wouldnt it be so much better if we could actually fly the ship and travel?" Now, in reality its meant to keep you amused and pass the time while the game/maps load. Bungie could have just left you waiting with a load bar, but they went above and beyond just to add that little extra.

          • Do you really think that Bungie will add-in specific features like script changes or Race-specific abilities when the game is due to be released so soon? Surely if one race had stronger buffs than the others, it would become the Master Race of certain Classes? Perhaps in DLC, but not in the actual game. Good ideas though! It would be nice to have Skyrim-like NPC Intelligence in Destiny where they would comment on Armour or appearances.

I don't support racial abilities or any sort of gameplay buff at all. However, I do like the idea of the race impacting how some characters interact with you. Nothing overly game-changing, just minor things... for example, maybe the Cryptarch says something slightly different when speaking with him if you're Awoken as opposed to a Human or Exo? More aesthetic things like that would be cool. If you want another different type of gameplay for races, I suppose each race could have its own mission at a certain level... the reward is exactly the same across all three races, as well as difficulty level and concept (i.e waves of enemies and a boss); just a different storyline... again, nothing game breaking or advantageous to a specific race.

I really hope we will find more about our Guardians in time, I'm really curious who we were in the past. I also hope for race/class specific missions, different story etc.

            • I'm glad race doesn't effect gameplay. If one or two races were "better", than everyone would play as the same race. Kudos to Bungie for this.
