dlc required?

Does anybody know, when the expansions start coming out, if they will be required to play Destiny? If so, how many of them will there be? I know they're $20 a piece and I don't want to spend more money than I have to.

Dlc is never mandatory. There are no release dates as yet other than the day 1 dlc for special edition items etc.
