An open letter to Bungie (and its fanbase) regarding Destiny and the future of consoles

I have been blind and missed out on how to send Bungie any feedback from the open Alpha so I will put the letter here and hope that it gains enught attention so that the developers can see it and for the community to discuss. First off you need a better forum system than this if you are going to launch such a big "mmo" like game, this is just like a chaotic shared twitter account. Take a page from Blizzard's World Of Warcraft, that game has a good forum structure. Second we need a better way to communicate in hubs and on the fly so you can get the more "mmo" feel with people talking everywhere and it's easier that way to get new friends, because right now getting to know other players is kinda hard when everyone is silent and contacting people is rather inconvenient. Then you have the issue with the framrate. If people actually read up on the issue from a trusted source they know that a higher framerate results in more opportunities for the eye and brain to respond and react to what happens on the screen making you more responsive and making the game feel more smooth. If I remember correctly the optimal framerate is somewhere around 280fps but that aint very realistic is it. 60fps has long been the golden standard for games since it is generally a good compromise but since last generation it has truly been dropped for a 30fps standard and i find it troubling. Want to know more about the Fps issue watch the youtube video i linked. But I am not here too discuss 30 vs 60 fps but to bring us all a solution to the problem so all partys can be happy. This is something that has been done for tripple A titles in the past and has been proven to work and should be even easier on todays pc hardware in consoles. That is to bring a real "options" menu in to mordern games. It has been done in games like Final Fantasy XIV for the Playstation 4 in a bit of a crude way where you can change the graphical fidelity of the game to increase and decrease the fps after your own liking like on PC! It aint hard to make options for graphics in current gen, it was more of a hassle in last gen with cell processors and such. It is easier to create a good range of options on the consoles where all current gen machines from that manufacturer have the same hardware, but on pc where the sky is the limit and the mariana trench is the starting point when it comes to hardware differences. Pc must have the options to have it run on all the different kinds of rigs and setups but they have all the choices even tho it is harder to do so in certant ways than consoles, So I ask why not for consoles? It is really a question about choices, have it your way as they say, but why not for consoles? Why is are we not allowed the same kind of treatment as the pc community, why cant we choose for ourselves? Are you afraid we will break the game? Do developers not trust us console players enught to make that decision ourselves? Why cant i choose the FPS and FOV on my console games like my pc? You have to remember that the question about what framrate it should be in or what FOV shall be used is only a technical question and has nothing to do with aesthetics and never will, lines like "movie experience" and such is just bullcrap they are shoveling down our throats. I am not attacking Bungie in any way, just criticizing the whole console market as a whole and I just want to help. I want you Bungie to listen to my plea that can shape the future of all console gameing to something better, you have the money, skill and tech know-how to make this come true, I know for a fact that it is easier to create options for a console than it is for a pc and to have the options for consoles as well will only make it a healthier market where you can truly have it your way. I want you Bungie to set the benchmark for the future of console gaming, I know you can do it since you have set console benchmarks before. I do not expect you to have this feature finished before the game,s launch but I would love it as a patch in the future. Having options will also make the competetive scene in the game better since they can have the game run like they need it too when they compete. I have written all of this for the benefit for us all, to have a better experiense, for every individual to decide on their own if they want higher graphical fidelity or higher framerate or what FOV they want based on what type of screen you are using. Im hoping you guys can see past my half-assed English and have read something you like, make your voice heard and thanks for your time. TL;DR We need an options menu so we can decide the framerate and such thing ourselves.

  • I agree that you shouldn't hold a machine capability back because last gen hardware cant handle it. If Xbox1 can't handle 1080p at 60fps, lower or turn off Antialiasing to run it at that speed PS4 top performance. Or Lower the resolution to 960 at 60fps. Give us users the ability to choose what we want. Latest Gen consoles are entry to low mid-level PC's that can handle customization compared to last gen.
PS4 owner who wants customization settings for both systems. No hate here.
• He is totally right, I used to turn all my graphics to minimum (when i had a crap PC) just for that extra frame rate. What good is stuff looking pretty if you can't turn around in time.

  • I agree with these issues. One forum labeled Destiny is... a mess. As for the frame rate and other graphic options. I absolutely agree. We should have a choice. I don't know any gamer who would rather have shadows than 60FPS. However, I do think there is an alternative motive for leveling the game play experience. I cannot think of a single valid reason to level the performance across devices if they aren't playing together. It would also explain the lack of a PC version.

  • Besides the forums being fine and destiny repeated being called not an mmo by bungie, the human eye can only recognize 24fps (aka what all movies are filmed at) the only reason for 30-60 is to account for lag. so that if you lag it's barely if at all noticeable because you're eyes can't process lag resulting in a subtraction of 20 frames out of the 60. which is why people prefer 60. The 30 frames when playing the alpha was extremely smooth though so I don't see 30 as a problem.

I don't know why I even look at this forum anymore. It's full of trolls, and people so ignorant and oblivious they don't even realize they're trolling...

        • Changing fps on PC makes sense because everyone has different machines, but on consoles, everyone with the same console will have the same specs, so it only makes sense to lock in the fps that works best on that particular console. If we're lucky, they may decide to give us 60 fps in a next-gen update. Most likely just PS4, unless M$'s Direct X update actually does what they say it'll do.

        • I agree on the forum part. As for the FPSs the only reason it is kept at 30 is because bungie wants to sell the same game on all 4 consoles and doubling FPS is kind of a big deal. Also having the option to switch FPS could be terrible for MP.

Yep, i would downgrade from 1080p to 720p to climb my fps higher. Its unfair for PS4 and XB1 to suffer the fate of 30fps because its would make decade old hardware jealous.

          • I'm tired of everyone saying Destiny is an mmo it's not, may have some aspects of it, but it isn't. It's not supposed to be like any other game we have played. As for social interaction I'm a member of crossbone vanguard a gaming community created on b.net to play games with each other and mainly Destiny. You must be very new to the forum to have these ideas. Idc about it looking good if they experience sucks so you can keep your 60 fps I don't need it hasn't bugged me with any other games won't bug me with this one. Developers know what they are doing. They want us to enjoy the game and I doubt most people would notice the difference seeming how most games are in 30 fps so I will continue to be anti social with my clan and enjoy my 30 fps tyvm

          • I thought this was going to be a thing about how the PS4 is being limited for parity reasons on Destiny. You know how both consoles are running Destiny at 1080p 30FPS and the PS4 should be easily capable of running it at 1080p 60FPS if the X1 can run it at 1080p 30FPS. This is good though TotalBiscuit is a cool guy and he makes cool videos.

          • This is one of the may reasons why I want the game to be released on PC. Hopefully Destiny 2 will be running at 60 FPS.

            • The reason all the frame rates are the same is because each systems console is exactly the same. With PCs, users with better equipment have a competitive advantage that users with older equipment do not have. With consoles, it's an even playing field. No one has an edge hardware wise. As for the 30 FPS, that is probably because this game is also on last gen. I'm really looking forward to this game...but even more excited to see Destiny 2 with hopes it's on next-gen only and not held back by older gen systems.

                • I'm sure things will be quite different when Destiny 2 is announced and it's a single gen title only. Fine tuning a game is incredibly hard and time consuming. I'm sure what we'll have with Destiny the is absolute best balance Bungie can give us as of this moment.

                        • They've said time and time again they're not trying to make an MMO, though it does have alot of MMO characteristics... idk. Also framerate is not up for disscussion, wait for the sequel for better graphics and framerate.

                          • The "movie experience" is actually not bullcrap. In general, movies tend to run at 24 fps which is the same as 30 fps in gaming. Now, when you move that up to 48 fps (same as 60 fps) you get that "soap opera experience". All the movements become too real because you're seeing it all happen more rather than having your brain fill in the details on a slower framerate. The "movie experience" has a more magical quality to it. A sort of unrealism you can't get at a higher framerate. I, for one, am okay with this. It's a video game. If I wanted max framerates, I would go outside and experience the real world. It still exists, you know.

The game is not an MMO, and 60fps, while an obvious visual difference, makes a difference if you are competitive and not everyone is playing at the same frame rate. You also run into framerate issues when pushing an open 60fps when there is a lot of things going on, which you get framerate dips well below 30 (sometimes single digits.) This is because your computer, or console is working twice as hard to get 60fps. Games are coming with options for a locked 30fps, which keeps this from happening. 30fps is just fine.
