I am looking for a book that I have not read and can't remember the title to. The plot goes something along these lines: An young Englishman meets a man and become fast friends (truthfully, I can't remember if they met at college during the story or were old friends). The friend then takes the protagonist to his family mansion where our protagonist meets the friends family. There he meets the friends sister who is engaged (or married?) to a man whom she does not love. While the protagonist and the sister start to have an affair, the friend sinks deep into alcoholism. As they try to help the friend, the protagonist and sister begin to plan to run off with each other. However, as the sister talks to her mother and a priest (also friend of the family) the sister decides she can't leave her husband (she is a Christian and the would adultery) and wants to try to improve her marriage. Dejected, the protagonist departs. The final scene depicts the protagonist years later leader a troop of soldiers through war torn Europe. That night, the protagonist is surprised to find himself back at his friend's mansion, now abandoned. As he orders his men to fortify the building in order to spend the night, he wanders deeper inside the building. There he finds himself in the family's chapel, untouched by the war outside. Once more, I greatly thank anyone who can tell me the title of this book or even tries.
