The Community's Future

Can or will we as a community make it to Destiny? I've seen a lot good members drop like flies. While I want to see Bungie succeed, the future seems cloudy. Will you as a member of this community make it all the way to Destiny. Are you committed enough?

  • The only thing I am concerned about is not maintaining community momentum into Destiny. In the past, we've educated new elders with Bungie lore as they've naturally transitioned from The Flood and the current game forum into the community forum, which always seemed to be the sort of settling pond for older accounts. In the past two years, we haven't had the sort of progression there, and instead have had a high turn over rate. There have been a number of factors that have contributed to this, I think. The new site change was taken a bit too personally by some older and intermediate members, softening the ranks of those to teach and learn. Bungie currently does not have a game to bring new members into the site at a steady and manageable pace, so we're losing bodies. Those that do make it here burn up quickly, as they don't have much to get attached to and develop. I see a lot of members who fight for attention through inflammatory or bait threads because that's likely the only way new members know how to get their name out. That's a destructive path, though, and most of those members leave (usually with an "I'm leaving!" thread) because they can't sustain the attention. Lastly, the core membership from the Halo 2/Halo 3 era has grown up, likely finding themselves with more to do in the real world, forcing them to leave this site or at least spend less time here. There is a lot of rich history and story from this company and community and in the past the oral retelling of it has kept it going, but we've lost that ability lately. I know a few of us are trying to keep it going by hosting events and sharing it all, but I am not sure if it will be enough. I fear that Destiny will release and there will be a torrent of new membership, yet these members will have nothing to do here and instead will steam roll over everything and re-establish a new norm for membership, which likely will be a low standard of conduct given how historically rude new members typically are.
