Should sniping take skill?

Ok so in today's FPS there's 2 main types of sniper gameplay. There's the Battlefield kind were there bullet drop, velocity, and other stats take effect when sniping and it takes 2-3 shots in the body and 1 in the head to drop someone. Or there's COD we're it shoots perfectly accurate no drop or anything and it takes one shot to drop. What do you think destiny should have? ( and tho it's hard to admit halo has COD sniping...)

    • I'll say that both should be in the game. We're talking a variety of different tech on the battlefield. If we want to give this a real perspective, it's the difference between covenant sniper rifles and human ones. I'm not saying that anything should be cut along strait lines like that, but variety in weapon tech would be nice. I can snipe with both, but I have my own preferences like anyone else. In other words, give players both options so we can play to our preferences.

The thing is that Destiny isn't bullet based Damage, its shown to be Damage based bullets. And since it's a future game there will likely be no drop anyway due to scientific advancement. I imagine that it'll be more difficult to kill an enemy, however hitting them likely won't be a problem.

        • Halo 4 has a pretty satisfying mix of skill and assist.

I like how cod has integrated it's sniping macanics bullets are fast and accurate but normally not a 1 hit kill unless it is a slow firing rifle. I can see a Guardian having much more health then a average soldier so maby using the halo laws of sniper kills Headshot kills Body shot 2 to kill Adjust for faster firing snipers by adding 1 shot to head or body shots. All of this is just wishful thinking with the massive amount of guns in Destiny I'm sure Bungie has had to fine tune the macanics for each. My only concern is the snipers will be like Borderlands snipers and the aim will be off (I still used them alot but they have my least favorite macanics).

IMO all types of gunplay should require skill. However we need to consider why sniping mechanics behave like they do in each game. Call of Duty is designed to be a fast paced run and gun style of gameplay where ballistics do not necessarily take effect due to small map size and fast reactions are extremely beneficial. The distances at which sniper rifles are used in that game would not incur any noticeable bullet trajectory changes, and mostly adhere to real life kill potential. A sniper rifle shot to the waist up will take you down and out, if not kill you. However, people also complain about trickshotting and quickscoping, which of course does not make sense considering CoD's perceived image as a realistic military shooter. Nevertheless, this type of sniping takes far more skill than Battlefield's take on sniping despite what people want to believe. Actual mechanics of trickshotting do exist, we simply see more cases of lucky shots getting hyped by little kids wanting to get into Faze or something which obviously annoys the shit out of everyone. Now Battlefield has implemented excellent trajectory mechanics in their game, and these are effective due to the vast size of Battlefied's maps. Don't lie to me about bullet drop existing when you stand 100m away from somebody with your zeroing set to 0m and simply aim at the head. I will admit to being a fan of this form of sniping mechanics over CoD's as they require you to take into account various range factors when taking far shots and being rewarded with that 1000m headshot, but, and this is a big but, hitting a shot like that from a .308 rifle should kill you. In no way will somebody continue sprinting full speed after getting their intestines ripped out by the SRR. This 2-3 shot kill is used for balancing mechanics where a sniper can simply sit in a bush and take people out undetected for half a game. It is a very good system, but a different one. Halo has its own mechanics, where it takes 2 body shots to kill, but it is offset with no bullet drop, as well as having the sniper rifle shoot with precision accuracy even without scoping. Tl;Dr All three games actually require their own type of skill-based sniping, so please do not simply lump something as either a CoD mode or a Battlefield mode based on how many shots it takes to kill somebody. Every type of gunplay a Guardian wishes specialize in should test their abilities to the utmost.

            • I've always like the bullet time on battlefield, really makes sniping a skill. Tho from what I hear the pvp maps for Destiny wont be big enough for significant bullet time skill. You'd shoot for the nose on a side moving target and get a headshot which would probably compensate for people who didn't have the reaction time to pull the trigger when passing the crosshairs over their head, it make sniping easy in my opinion. For pve it would be awsome for real long range Target.

              • Should put in pole Halo sniping, for obvious reasons.

Sniping depending on the Halo game took skill. Halo 3 for instance required you to lead shots once you hit longer ranges, and the aim assist was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than what you'd find in a CoD game. As well the required headshot for a one hit kill made it a tricky weapon to actually get good with. Though in Halo 4, Snipers have more aim assist than they've ever had, your reticle is huge, and bullet magnetism makes it almost impossible not to headshot, even while no-scoping. IMO, Destiny looks like a Halo map-size game, meaning aside from projectiles, sniper skill should be about precision aiming with a small reticle, and very little aim assist (if any at all), and headshots should certainly be crucial. I don't think bullet drop or projectile speed should really be much of a factor considering these are hyper-futuristic weapons we are talking about, and they aught to be capable of firing much farther, and with much faster moving projectiles than modern technology. One interesting factor that could come into play is "focus" instead of having Quick Scoping like you find in CoD, Destiny's Sniper should require you to wait a second after scoping while your reticle "deblooms" to a precise shot (effectively meaning your character has to focus down the sight before you're guaranteed a hit). Just to promote the sniper as more of a long range, patience and skill oriented dedicated weapon, and promote using your Utility Rifle, Heavy Weapon, or a completely different Special if you're opting for close quarters fights. Unscoped, the Sniper should be damn near impossible, but still master-able with tons of practice, basically by completely removing the reticle from the screen, but still allowing you to perform a skilled no-scope if you land a zero aim-assist shot in the exact point on the screen the reticle would otherwise be.

              • Since this is the company that made halo I'm guessing it'll be in the middle.

              • I personally think sniping should be hitscan, however add heavy sway, no auto aim, (that should just be standard for everything) and slow run speed.

              • Let me start by saying all games have different sniping systems that have benefits and flaws. The perfect accuracy sniping has in games like CoD and Halo works in both cases seeing as CoD is short range and Halo is set 500 years in the future. Personally, I like the Halo "no-scope" system wherein you have a precise reticle instead of taking a shot that can go anywhere like in CoD. What many people choose to ignore is the fairness aspect of the game. You will ALWAYS hear people complain about how a shot "should have killed somebody" or "that was definitely a headshot". We're all guilty of at least thinking this, but in Halo it is much less common. The problem in CoD is the kill area is less defined than in Halo. The two body shots or one headshot system is well-defined and fair, so it seems like that would be the best way to go. HOWEVER... there was only one sniper in Halo (two if you include the beam rifle, but damage is the same). Presumably in Destiny there will be a larger variety of guns with a larger variety of stats, which is more similar to CoD. With this being the case, it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a fair sniping system across the board. So how make it fair? I think the best thing to do is to keep the damage constant, or have a few separate categories of damage (for example a low damage with higher rate of fire, high damage with lower rate of fire, etc.). From these basics, vary the stats such as sway, zoom, accuracy, mag size, and so forth. So I guess in the end what we're looking at is sort of a hybrid style of sniping of Halo and CoD (pray for the Halo no-scoping system). I think the team at Bungie will do a fine job striking a good balance between the two. P.S. I never really played BF so I will not speak too much of the sniping in that game, but 3 shots in the chest seems a little much for a kill with a high-powered weapon. 2 seems like the max.
