A Combat Mechanic ive always wanted to see (Down But Not Out)

What i find annoying in some games is that the way health works, you have a shield and then health or just health. In my mind there are some cases where a "final wound" wouldn't have been fatal to the person. I would love to see a "Down But Not Out" mechanic, where you go down from a shot that isn't to vital organs like the heart or brain etc. In this case your character wouldn't be "dead" but critically wounded on the battlefield, that means they are still in friendly and foe line of fire. This would allow for some great teamplay, in the sense that players should would be able to drag there critically wounded comrades back to cover, of course this doesn't come without risks the idea is that you could either treat them in the line of fire or drag them back to cover to receive medical attention to stabilise them. This would allow for in combat ability to give aid to a comrade if the team works together by providing suppression and cover fire to the recoverer of the squadmate this could also be promoted by bonuses in raids and strike for team play like this. When "stabilised" the player is still combat able but is reduced in health after shields break to be criticalled or killed, the idea is that the player could have a time to bleed out of course the wounded player could: A) use there sidearm like a pistol to shoot enemies B) try to reduce there bleeding to increase the time to they bleed to death C) use another item like there knife or a deployable small sword to keep back melee enemies like to hive, whom i imagine could try to drag off wounded players. I doubt an idea like this would be ever implemented but i believe it would be a key way to push teamwork in big battles and raids and strikes Where having teammates alive especially in major fights is useful, so giving players a way to save comrades who are not fully dead would be interesting and useful. EDIT ADDITION: There was a martydom idea earlyier in the day, this could also allow a player whom has a grenade when on the way out to go out with a bang, by pulling the pin out of there grenade and going down as they are for example: Swarmed by hive....

  • I would like to see that when you go down you can still use your weapons for a short time but with some lag due to your injuries. About 10 seconds worth. I don't like the fact that when you go down you turn into a floating ball of light until someone revives you. The body should go down and be limp until a revive cinematic is done over the fallen Guardian. Maybe a slow crawl for a brief time just to position yourself for revival.

Combat Medic Personally I like to be a jack of trades soloist... Movement... Buffs... Debuffs... Heals over time... Damage over time... These are usually my primary focus skills. I do team activities but I don't like to rely on anyone since I am the support... I stand on my own two feet making my way helping out where I can changing to the situation. I can see myself sliding to my downed teammate and throw up a shield and revive... Weather if they are down on a blink of death fighting back or as a ghost watching

  • So kind of like black ops second chance, and borderlands when you go down you can still live just have to kill someone. I like your idea because I hate dying from Being shoot in the foot of the knee. Are you going to bleed out? Can people revive you, or you revive you self after so many kills. Will each different type of each alien finish you off when close to you, like having a fallen captain step on your chest and cut your head off by making a x the lifts your head up and throw it at your friends

  • Awesome ideas... I agree that most games would benefit from an injury mechanic. I think for slow-paced more tactical multiplayer games this is a great idea but for fast paced arena-type games it could be annoying because it puts pumps in the flow of the action. I'm all for it in any circumstance though I love it when tactical elements are added in any circumstance

  • Excuse me while I bring up game comparisons: I actually thought of ARMA II before Army of Two when it came to comparisons. Though in ARMA I don't think the wounded have a means to fight back, they just scream in pain. Then again considering how not every guardian is going to keep a pistol in their main 3 guns this might be more accurate, unless you just let them use whatever gun's in the same slot the pistol would be in... That's gonna be fun to aim! Though reading some of the argument between you and magister, I was reminded of the Blacklight Retribution revive system: When a soldier is killed by the enemy by anything that isn't along the lines of explosive ammo, breach hammers, etc. their auto-respawn time will be longer, but they can choose to revive manually after a small delay or if a player using the revival kit equipment managed to toss them syringe, revive themself. I could imagine ghosts having a program where they could apply some light medical care to their owners if given the right means, but that subject is off the topic of this thread. Though when you brought up the idea of the revive brining the guardian back up with less health... Besides thinking "no thank you" I remembered 2 games: -Metal Gear Solid 3: I've heard your health actually goes up a little after treating wounds. -Spiral Knights: before one of it's big updates that changed up most of the system, players could revive other players by giving them half of their health. That way they could avoid using their energy to self-revive and potentially lose enough energy to not afford the next elevator, but it would also force everybody to be extra careful with not getting hit.

    • In game variations, guardians who die remain in place for a small amount of time, during which other guardians can revive the fallen player. This feature is even awarded bonuses when used. Ex. A titan kills a hunter in PvP, the hunter remains there for some period of time, during which a friendly warlock shows up and revives the deceased hunter. Extra points are awarded for doing such.

        • I would agree if it was a slower paced game like old school ghost recon. With the faster pace game that destiny will be I think the revive will work better. I think it would be better if team mates could deploy buffs or abilitys which could help you stay alive.

          • It's effectively final stand in CoD, bleeding out in Gears of War, and second wind in Borderlands. We have seen the ability to revive players in Destiny, although they do not stay on the battlefield. I doubt we'll see anything like you've described.

                • So would this be a Borderlands type revive where you can still shoot while down and cover the person trying to revive you?

                      • From the E3 gameplay he had the choice of reviving a teammate while in combat with Rixis, and later on the Titan revived someone in the public event. So if we're able to revive someone dead while in combat, I can't see a use for the mechanic you explained.
