Let's talk Halo 4 music.

I liked it, but it doesn't suit Halo.

21

I liked it, I want 343 to keep this style of music

20

I didn't like it. (Discuss)

I didn't like it, but it's probably the way to go.

I made the same post on 343i, doing it here now because this is my only true home. Anyone else who is a true Halo veteran here knows how iconic the Halo music was while Marty O'Donnell was doing the music. I loved it, so did many other people. Marty definitely tried to make the heroic feeling and I think he succeeded spectacularly. I will never forget the Halo 3 OST 'Never Forget', every time it plays I find myself humming away to memory of the tune. Those moments were awesome. I'm just not sure what Neil Davidge was wanting to create with the Halo 4 soundtrack, I got it on Spotify and listened to it, a lot, and some pieces I really like, was it Arrival, Revival? The one that played when the Didact woke? Anyway, they were good, that was good, it matched the feel of what was going on, ancient evil awakes, we're all going to be composed, cue evil sounding choir so on, so forth, but the rest of the soundtrack was, well, quite forgettable. Music is important to gaming, and by these changes to the music I'm wondering if this is the music 343 want's to stick with or if Neil Davidge is really just a legend in the making. We will see. Discuss. (Edit: I'm surprised, many people seem to rate the Halo 3 soundtrack as near-worst. It's one of my favourites.)

  • As Goji said, its too disjointed, and the tracks overall lack connection and can't create a solid ambience throughout the campaign. Not too mention only the bland tracks were repeatedly heard; awesome stuff like haven and cloud city were hardly present. And the lack of the actually halo theme is unforgivable.
Thoughts on Halo 4's soundtrack and its criticisms:
What you guys take for the "Halo feel" isn't really the "Halo feel" at all. Why? Because there is no Halo feel. I dare you all to give me some objective criteria to classify a song as such. Hell, the very fact that the term has the word "feel" in it pretty much classifies it as something completely subjective. Of course, nobody will take a step back and look at the true problem, because as on Bungie.net people's judgements over here are so clouded by their emotions and idealism that they'll immediately cling to the past to solve it. No, the true problem isn't some arbitrary "feeling" that the soundtrack isn't meeting, it's because the soundtrack is simply not as well constructed overall as Marty's. Don't get me wrong. I love the soundtrack. Indeed, after Chronarch spotted some of the unreleased tracks online, I've considered it to be my favorite of the Halo soundtracks, just edging out ODST. But the thing is, as excellent as the tracks may be on their own, they don't flow well with each other. That is, they don't give off an overall emotional tone. They feel caught up in the moment- each are key themes for every important section of the story. While I believe it's important for the soundtrack to tell a story (which Halo 4's does- and beautifully at that), to create something as memorable as Marty's scores for the general populace a soundtrack has to give off an overall tone. In Halo CE, the synth was present throughout the entire soundtrack. In Halo 2/3, the choir was present throughout the entire soundtrack. In Halo 3 ODST, the sax and piano were present throughout the entire soundtrack. In Reach, the entire soundtrack had the orchestra present. While every single track may not have kept the sounds mentioned at the forefront, they were almost always there. Now when we look at Halo 4, we go from piano to percussion to choir to electronica and various other textures and sounds. There's no sound that I can truly pinpoint and say, well that sums up the game pretty nicely. It's instead a jumble of confusion when I go to think of the soundtrack as a whole. However, when I think of each individual track, they're all beautiful. From Belly of the Beast's string/percussion to 117's epic orchestration and backing choir, it's all great. Indeed, Kazuma Jinnouchi's contributions to the soundtrack are often lauded, and this may be because he manages to keep a set emotional tone throughout to the best of his ability- almost every track he makes contains a hint of 117 or the instruments used to make it. Think of Wreckage, Sacrifice, Lasky's Theme, Mantis and 117 itself. Gravity, Never Forget, and Majestic contain much of the same orchestral approach. It all points to a more consistent flow. Now if we compare, say, Convoy, Kantele Bow, and Green and Blue, I can barely even see any similarities. Again, I'm not saying they're bad- indeed, I listed three of my favorites. It's just they don't flow well with each other and don't give off that consistent emotional tone that Marty and, to some extent, Jinnouchi are able to deliver. Bottom line: The soundtrack is excellent. I wouldn't trade Davidge for anyone else. However, Davidge (and the crew of 343 as a whole) must work together to deliver a consistent emotional tone for the entire game should they strive to deliver a memorable soundtrack as Marty's.
Actual Opinion: ODST > Halo 4 > Halo CE >/= Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo Reach = Halo Wars Keep in mind that I'd give Halo Wars a 9/10. I fcking love Halo's music.
The only song on the OST that I like and find memorable is 117. I can name just about every Halo song from any game's OST besides Halo 4's. It just didn't feel right.

  • I'll admit that I liked some of Halo 4's tracks like To Galaxy, 117 and Arrival. The rest don't sound like Halo to me. I want tracks that give off the Halo feel like In Amber Clad and Rue and Woe

  • Not much of the soundtrack was memorable, save for 117 and the vehicle charges on Infinity.

  • It ranged from great to alright to forgettable to making carbon copies of pieces from other games where the original is far better. *coughGravitycough*

  • Halo 4 was all prometheans and forerunners and magic death rays. It needed a new style.

Neil Davidge can make good music, as we've seen with Halo 4's soundtrack. But the problem is, It doesn't resemble Halo enough or at all in most cases. Now that the story is being focused on the Master Chief again, this would've been a great opportunity to bring back some classic Halo tracks from the original trilogy. As the original trilogy progressed, we got fresh new music with each new game of course, but there was always that original music at the core. Halo 2's Delta Halo Suite is a good example. That's what was missing from Halo 4's soundtrack. It was all new and unfamiliar for the most part, and ultimately didn't sound like Halo music.
/opinion
343i was going for music that better suit an epic heroic journey, they weren't going necessarily for recognition. Marty's music, while good, recognizable and iconic, I always felt lacked power, weight and as such a lot of the emotion was lost. With Halo 4's music I can say I liked virtually every track on the disc, even if they aren't all distinctly recognizable. But that isn't the point, the music most certainly does fit the atmosphere within the context of the game's story, and brings with it a cinematic power the previous games lacked for the most part; I only really listened to a handful of Marty's tracks every now and then while ignoring the rest of the track, but Halo 4's soundtrack? I'll listen to the whole thing barring only a handful of songs. Hard to explain, but there's simply a quality that Marty's scores lack that makes it difficult to take his music seriously. I've never been able to take any of the emotional scenes in Halo 1-3 seriously mainly because the music felt forced, like it was trying to be emotional, rather than letting it flow naturally. So on the whole I like the new music better. Could do with improvement of course, but the same can be said about anything.

It's actually a good soundtrack, but I do not hear it during the game very well and it's executed poorly. Also it's pretty short. More beats Por favor.

From what I have heard of it, it is decent. It was just implemented into the campaign at such a ridiculously low volume. Especially when you are on a mission with a Warthog, you might as well not have any music in those sections.
