Americans disgree with their leaders on abortion

Article
Forty-one years after the Supreme Court's landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade, two-thirds of the American population believe that decisions on abortion should be made between a woman, her family and her doctor, according to a HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted last week. But a majority of the country's elected officials see things differently. Only 40 percent of Congress, one-third of all governors and a quarter of state legislatures support the legal right to have an abortion, according to a new report by NARAL Pro-Choice America. More than half of elected officials fully oppose legal abortion, a position held by only 14 percent of Americans, while a small fraction of lawmakers have a mixed voting record on the issue.
I think that the most interesting part of this is how much the responses change depending on the wording of the question. For example, 47 percent of people think that abortion should be generally illegal, but only 24 percent think that "government has a right and obligation to pass restrictions on abortion" and 33 percent think that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. It would be great to know why people think so differently on questions that are generally the same.

  • Call me cynical, but I think this is because of special interest groups, specifically Christian/Family Values ones. Churches collect money from members, and then pay politicians to vote a certain way.

  • I am pro choice but I am not blind. I understand that it's a moral issue, but I don't think pro life people understand the impact of raising an unwanted child in an already overpopulated world, not to mention most abortions happen early on when the fetus is still mostly a cell. Its hard to determine when a mother's cell becomes someone else's body.

  • I'm fine with abortion is cases where the mother was sexual assaulted, in cases where the fetus is a danger to the mother, and in cases where the parents aren't financially able to support a child. If a financially stable person in a healthy relationship chooses to have an abortion just to avoid responsibility, I say that she should have thought about that when she decided not to use protection and that she should have to deal with the consequences, even if she puts the baby up for adoption.

Abortion should be legal. And anyone who says "hurr adoption" is an idiot who doesn't know the pain of bearing children. Also, you don't care about children already wanting to be adopted.

        • Perhaps a good portion of people who are personally against it see at as a personal choice.

        • I would have to say there's a margin where people don't fully understand it.

          • This is where government doesn't work. The views of the people in power are not shared by the views of the people.

          • I don't understand the 47%? What if you're both 17 and the condom split, raise a baby with no money and education?
