SOLVED
I am trying to practice my understanding of long division which from my knowledge isn't as complicated as it looks because it follows a repeating process that sounds something like this:
Divide - Divide the number on the bottom by the divisor. Place the result at the end of the number at the top.
Multiply - Multiply the next digit at the top by the divisor. Place the result on the bottom.
Subtract - Concerns the two numbers closest to the bottom. Subtract the bottom number from the top number. Place the result below it.
Bring down - Place the next digit of the dividend at the end of the number on the bottom
13750 ÷ 50 = 275
When I do long division however, I end up with -00333 and I keep running into negative numbers:
....... -00333
50 V 13750
........ 0
........13
........ 0
........137
........150
........-135
........ -150
........150
........ -150
........ 300
The answer should come out to 275, not -00333

Mental math is better...besides, long division is literally pointless to know.
-
Also, watch a youtube video on it or go to Khan Academy.

You can cancel the 0s having 1375/5 and then divide 13 by 5, 2 remainder of 3, divide 37 by 5, 7 remainder of 2, and then divide 25 by 5, 5. So, 275

just take out that trusty old ti-84

It's better to do it in reverse. 50 goes into 50 once, so you have 1 in the answer and 13700 left in the numerator. 50 goes into 700 14 times so now you have 15 in the answer and 13000 left in the numerator. 50 goes into 3000 60 times so now you're at 75 with 10000 left. 50 goes into 10000 200 times so you have 275.
-
50 only goes into 137 twice, and that equals 100, then you move to 37, 375, which goes into 7 times at 350, so you have 25, move down the 0, and you get 5 more.

You can't subtract 150 from 137 in long division. You would only subtract 100, meaning two 50s.
