Multiplayer Fairness? - How do you feel about custom loadouts (weapons, armor and focus) being brought into multiplayer?

I'm against it; it would make competition unfair.

I'm indifferent; who cares? Lets shoot each other!

I'm all for it; variety is the spice of life!

Personally, I am struggling with the notion of weapons and armor that will possibly make the playing field unequal. I wouldn't mind as much if it was simply a small percentage increase in accuracy or whatever; I play Battlefield and can grow accustomed to people playing with different weapons. Then I read the GI article about how exotic weapons bring skills with them, like becoming invisible while being zoomed in with Closing Time (sniper). That is an absolute game changer! If I were to not read that and spend an entire match getting sniped without finding the guy, the competitive monster in me would scream indecent things towards the unjust situation at hand. Halo Reach was like this at first, but I quickly came to love how armor abilities changed the way people fought. However, I only loved them once I became aware of them and could alter the way I fight. The key to success in a game like this is being able to adapt to your enemy and their loadout, which I have no problem doing. But with these exotic weapons, seeing as how they will likely add them over time, I foresee a constant frustration with weapons/armor that I do not understand, and therefore cannot win against. Anyways, I'm not completely closed off to the idea, but I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the matter. Please convince me of how amazing this will be!!! UPDATE: I just remembered reading something a while back that mentioned how Bungie wants to make this game accessible to all people, even if you can only play 20 minutes a week. I'm sure that this will be true of campaign, but if I only have time to play competitive, am I going to constantly be at a disadvantage because I don't spend time in story mode? Will my weapons/armor/skills never quite be enough to compete?

  • Bungie already said you will be matched against players of similar skill and if you are the underdog you will still be rewarded.

  • They also said that the game would reward you for killing players for doing well since you were in an underdog position. because of this I am actually exited for this somewhat unbalanced game play, reminds me of when I played world at war and the lvl 60 players were running around with flame throwers, I would get killed by them several times (which was somewhat frustrating) but the satisfaction of taking one of those players down made it worth it and now this game is also going to recognize me killing a better player and reward me for it. I am also a revenge killer so maybe this is more satisfying for me than it would be for others. The other reason I like this feature is "Borderlands Gun Love" syndrome. there is currently no other game that gets me as exited about new loot as borderlands because every once and a while you you find a gun that is particularly good and then you can really notice the difference. now i can get that same gun love for my weapons i destiny and bring it into multiplayer and really notice the difference when i try out the new gun i found. i like this alot better than COD or Battlefield (though I enjoy Both) where the weapons are all relatively similar and the game is constantly patched when some gun seems a little better than the others

I have a feeling that strikes will be the go-to mode for people that want a quick in and out experience. Plus, I imagine that the more you play, the easier/quicker it is to access competitive multiplayer. My impression is that the "real" point of the interview was that grinding competitive multiplayer and bypassing the story-mission won't lead to great success. Destiny is campaign co-op driven.

    • There will always be weapons that are better than others, but I find it quite refreshing that we can enter multiplayer with any weapons we want.

I play lost planet 2, so I'm used to fighting people with better weapons (even though I die..a lot). I just hope we have one loadout, not 5 different ones. We would be forced to play with the same gear until the end of the match. For some reason that sounds a lot better.

        • I'm really hoping for an Arena throw back gametype. Equal weapon starts and weapon pick ups ideally. That being said, I'm also looking forward to straight up, insane Destiny gameplay. Lars mentioned a system to keep things fair, so people with epic weapons and high level focuses will be grouped together and newbies will be grouped together.

So yeah, the entire "I've never seen these wolf shaped turrets before and they are slaughtering me dear god what is going on with this game?" thing is definitely one of the challenges that Bungie will need to tackle to make Destiny a success. Thankfully the solutions are pretty straight forward, you just need to give players the resources they need to understand what is going on. For example, if you die in a competitive multiplayer match, let players press X to bring up a little breakdown of their death while they're waiting to respawn. "You were killed by Hylebos, a Titan with this particular Focus, who shot you with Closing Time, an Exotic Sniper Rifle with the following traits: You cloak when you aim down sights, and you can pick up ammo crates remotely." Boom. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. League of Legends has a simillar sort of system in place, when you die, it shows you the three champions that dealt you the most damage and specifically which skills or basic attacks that damage came from and what type of damage it was (physical, magic, true) so you can better adjust your build to deal with what's going on. So long as all the weapon abillities and such are easy to explain and understand in a few short sentences (nothing as grossly bloated as Armor Lock was), I don't think it would be too huge of a problem with a system like that in place.

The only thing about PVP that makes me unhappy is being forced to play it for gear or weapons. I'd rather just ignore it all together. But load outs and all these super weapons does not hinder my joining in. It's the grind you have go through in order to unlock them that ticks me off like BF3. If I'm getting beat because someone has a rifle that makes them invisible well then it should be because I haven't made it to Mars and beat a boss. I now have a serious quest to complete to even the stakes in MP. But if I have to kill 300 players with a pistol to unlock it... That's just frustrating.

              • I worry about new people coming into the game and come face to face with level-20 hardcores. That may frustrate people off and I'd like as many as possible playing the game.
