Lars Bakken Interview: Multiplayer Details

Alright, if you folks haven't seen it yet, there is a great new interview with Lars on the GameInformer website. Check it out now. Things confirmed: - Multiplayer will be sort of blended in with the campaign. Your character will carry over between the two. Bungie's sophisticated networking methods will still find ways to make sure that you are matched as fairly as possible. - Voice chat will only be between you and your fireteam members to prevent negative trolling experiences. Not sure how I feel about this one. It seems like muting works just fine for me. I'll have to see how they work this out in the beta before I pass judgment, I guess. - Killing in MP will be faster than it was Halo. I don't mind this as long as it isn't Call of Duty fast because that takes all the strategy out of it. I imagine that with a combination of armor and health, it will be evenly paced. I'm guessing the speed is more similar to the increased pace of Halo 4. - Players who are MP only might have to branch out to get the most out of this game. Lars says there should be ample incentives for that though. I will add more to this once I'm not using my phone, but until then, how does this info make you feel?

  •
- Killing in MP will be faster than it was Halo. I don't mind this as long as it isn't Call of Duty fast because that takes all the strategy out of it.
Declaring that Call of Duty doesn't take strategy is a very annoying, short sighted, fanboyish statement. Call of Duty doesn't have less strategy than Halo, it has different strategy. It's true, that if I see you before you see me, I'm very likely to kill you, and you'll have almost no chance to turn the tides. But that just pushes the skills necessary to do well in Call of Duty away from accuracy over time, and more towards stealth and detection. A good Call of Duty player doesn't just happen to see other players first. A good Call of Duty player has honed the skills necessary to guarantee seeing other players first. Just because a game focuses more on a set of skills you're not used to needing, doesn't mean it doesn't take skill to play that game.

In regards to fireteam-specific game-chat, I'll copy/paste my thoughts from another thread:
[We] assume that it's a blanket restriction across all activities and in all situations, it may not be. Regardless, it makes sense from a sociological point of view. It encourages positivity. You're inviting people in instead booting people out. A join-the-conversation button vs a personal banhammer.
I'll also add that my personal experiences in big team slayer and big team battle make the idea of fireteam-specific game-chat sound all the more appealing. I rarely go a match without having to mute another player (for one reason or another). I've also observed that players naturally sub-divide anyway. Working in duos and trios.

      • An alternative that I thought would be nice to small party chat is a flag system where if a player is flagged or specifically muted so many times, they receive a warning and then temporary voice chat ban of increasing magnitude the more it happens. Bring down the hammer!
Voice chat will only be between you and your fireteam members to prevent negative trolling experiences.
I'm all for this 100% Someone made a good point yesterday. You meet ppl in public events right? why would I want to hear what they are saying to each other. It would be confusing to say the least. All of a sudden your chat goes from 3 to 6 or 9 or 12? I have enough trouble with all the voices in my head to begin with :-) Keeping it at just your Fireteam is perfect for me. It will be interesting to hear and see how this works in the Beta :-) I also like that there is incentive for all players to play in the campaign.

      • ehhh....ummm.....I uuughh.... I'll have to wait and play it. Seems alright except for the voice chat thing. They guy said that they are making "Bungie" maps so that lightens my spirits. I hope we get some Halo or Marathon remakes C:
