I'm not one to go out of my way to see Disney movies, and I wasn't looking forward to this, but my girlfriend loves them and so we went to see Frozen last night. For some reason I wasn't expecting singing, so when it started with a song in the first 5 seconds I was pretty pissed off. But it turned out to be a surprisingly complex and fun movie.
First, they don't have a clear cut villain. There's no overtly evil person, and at one point it felt like a toss-up between three characters over who was actually going to be the villain. Second, it wasn't just a cookie-cutter "vulnerable princess meets Prince Charming character and defeat evil witch/wizard/etc.". There were several protagonists you cared about, and they were developed very well. The characters change visibly throughout the film, but subtly enough that it doesn't feel like the directors are saying "and now she's angry/sad/scared" etc.
Another thing I was worried about was the comic relief character...a frankly retarded looking snowman that makes stupid jokes. Except his jokes were really funny and they took him out of important scenes when the real relationships mattered. His voice-actor's singing ability was really surprising too. Actually, every single actor in this had incredible talent; the voice of Elsa (main character's older sister and Queen) was absolutely stunning to the point that it kinda hampered the immersion.
And apparently there was some concern that the characters would just be rip offs of Tangled, but while the two sisters were both very strong women, they were different enough to be unique. And there's a visible effort to criticize the "true love's kiss" crap that Disney has used every time for the past century, which was nice. The "prince" was strong, but he didn't have to swoop in and save the day.
Anyways, I know I'm giving up my man card with this thread, but it was really just a great movie that you should check out. I think you'll be surprised.

I really agree with this review. I expected a crappy retelling of an old story, but I got something new and refreshing.

OT: I heard a lot of bitching from the internet specifically about how similar the faces look between the characters and Tangled and other movies as well. Specifically that save for a few feature changes, the face is almost exactly the same: Cute, soft and round. People were ranting how it's sexist of Disney and Dreamworks to only show one type of woman out there.

I've heard good things about it. I'm still not going to see it though, but props to them for making a good film.

I did kind of like Tangled, and the animation style is nice. I probably won't see this in the cinema, but I wouldn't be averse to watching it on DVD or Netflix in the future.

Thanks Ebert

Curious George said it was good too, one guy and one girl so far have said it's pretty decent. I'm so far surprised at the turnout. Thanks for the update.

I'd go see this if I wasn't dependent on my parents driving me to see it. I really enjoy these types of movies (I thought Tangled was really good, and I'm a bitch for animated romances), and this is one I was looking forward to. Glad to hear it's a good film.

Meh, I'll wait for it to be on Netflix.

#shoveitupmybutt Classy Turkey. Also its cool you went to see this with your gf. Its like a 'get out of jail free' card.

Eh, I keep seeing commercials for it and I just keep thinking that I don't want to see it. I might check it out in future now though.
