Hello! I was wondering since I do not own AC4, has anyone been able to play the open world part of the game without the campaign? I'd like to try to get Edward and his ship really ranked up, so does anybody know if I could just opt to go straight to the open-world? (like the ship combat, freeing prisoners, finding treasure and generally avoiding the story, cutscenes and everything)
This bit of information would help me greatly, so thanks in advance!

for the diving bell you have to progress the story a fair amount. otherwise, the game opens up completely pretty much after about an hour and a half, around the time you get your ship. if you're looking to get collectibles and unlock all the outfits, there are a couple that you will need to almost complete the game in order to get, but as far as edward and his ship's upgrades go, you can pretty much max it out without having to do much of the story. personally i enjoyed the story, edward is probably the best protagonist in the series so far in my opinion, and the characters are all well written in general. the overarching plot isn't the best but it has it's moments. the story is worth dipping into after a few hours pirating in the open world, if anything but to mix up the pace and keep things fresh.
