How does one go from not being religious to being religious?
Specifically looking for people who have done it themselves. Explain your story, because I'm fascinated.

Edited by Banned Huskus: 5/7/2014 6:40:13 AMIf supposedly you go to hell when you die for not believing in God, but go to heaven for believing in God, you have literally nothing to lose by being religious. If it turns out God is real and you're religious, you go to heaven. If it turns out he's fake, nothing happens and you die as normal. If you're an atheist and it turns out God is real, you're going to hell. Therefore, you have nothing to lose by being religious and everything to lose by being atheist. I know there is a philosophical term for this but I can't recall it at the moment.

Edited by Nice teeits: 3/20/2014 1:47:13 PMI have. I was an atheist until I was 29. Why did I become a theist? I actually learned about Christianity from a historical and philosophical perspective. I got over my "that's not fair!" attitude and really looked at the evidence objectively. The evidence for God is undeniable if you're being intellectually honest. Frankly, atheism and agnosticism looks very silly to me now.

It saddens me to see people who hate on religion's like Christianity because of the churches rather than the content and message of the religion itself. I don't follow the Catholic Church but I consider myself Catholic.

Happens about as often as lightning strikes and kills a honey badger.

Edited by cxkxr: 5/7/2014 8:07:36 PMI became a theist bc of my interest and love for science and philosophy. My personal experiences confirmed my suspicions as well, once I considered the possibility. These three brilliant philosophers, one being a mathematician, two being former atheists, have a very similar logical process as I do. Feel free to indulge yourselves. I recommend watching if you're an agnostic on the fence of theism. Part 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCBwjUMLaZA

"Recovering Atheist" So he basically got dumber?

Maybe they saw or learned something that changed their mind. M-maybe we should all change, we should all be good people. Let's make the planet earth a planet to remember. Let's place porn magazine everywhere for the aliens to find when we are gone.

I use to claim I was an Atheist.. Then one day.. I realized the universe recycles everything.. Bam. Scientifically possible reincarnation

Edited by Gynec00logist: 5/7/2014 11:09:00 AMI used to be an atheist.
But then I became a sex god.
I too used to be an Atheist. Then Shrek embraced me with his love, now I spread his word.
-
Personally, I don't think they were atheists to begin with. Probably agnostic or something and just used terms loosely.
-
Atheists who become theists weren't atheists to begin with. They were angry at god and denounced god. They still believed but were having the religious equivalent to a temper tantrum. When they calm down they stop denouncing God and become good little theists again. This shows by his misunderstanding in thinking all atheists are mad at or hate god. For me to hate you, or even be mad at you, you must exist. Its why people aren't mad at Osiris or Odin, or Zeus. They don't exist. Are you an atheist for being mad at Odin for not having a shorter winter? Nope.

Edited by FatherlyNick: 5/7/2014 7:45:23 PMAren't we all born atheist? Only through family we actually are taught everything and sort of forced to accept their views as ours.

I used to be religous, but now I'm atheist and I actually feel better now. Thanks to my dads and overall Christian hypocrisy and how much crap it actually causes.
here comes the religious people with thier hate.
I feel like guy in the video is lying

I stopped being an edgy, selfish teenager.

I believe in God because of a near-death experience that occurred when I was about two years old. I could tell the full story if you like, but for now I'll just list the main points of interest: - Should have drowned because I couldn't swim. - Grandma found me several meters from the water's edge. - Nobody around who could have saved me. If there weren't a God, I would have died 15 years ago. That's why nobody will ever be able to convince me that there isn't a higher power of some kind.

Edited by SolanGoose: 3/20/2014 5:42:29 PMPersonally I think the "born-again" people are either emotionally weak, or lack critical thinking skills. There is NO WAY one could possess the knowledge and understanding of there being no god as much as say... Richard Dawkins, and then legitimately become theistic. No one could logically conclude that. Most of these re-theists (if you will) are a little sceptical of god, yet have very little knowledge about scientific processes such as quantum mechanics or evolution. They can also simply be too scared to see a world without a happy ending. So therefor they quickly relapse and become religious again. Their atheistic views were never really that strong to begin with.
-
Anyone who says that they are an atheist because they are angry with god is not really an atheist.
-
Second comment. I hate the way he paints atheists. I don't hate god, I just believe he's not here. Why? Because thetes no proof. I've had really tough times and no one helped me, not even "god". And morals aren't just from the bible and Christianity. I mostly hate how if you're not christian, you are just an evil person who hates god and everything he stands for. It's hypocritical, arrogant and just wrong. I'm so tired of it.
-
Maybe they find solace knowing they were meant to be ruled over.
-
It is kind of interesting, we generally think of Atheists as being cynical so maybe some life event would make them turn to religion as a last resort? Otherwise I'm not certain, but then I'm Agnostic and I see no point in faith without evidence anyway so maybe I'm biased.
-
Look at all the atheist butthurt. Ha, fools
-
You loose a kid in public trust me you will find god real quick (not saying this as a religious person its a joke).
-
Usually it's something like a life changing event (when Bob Dylan's motorcycle crash for example) but in Kirk Cameron's case it seems like he's always been a theist. He's always wanted there to be a god but at first he hadn't found a reason for it. So in a way he was never truly an atheist, he was just a confused theist (similar to how many homophobes are actually confused homosexuals).
