How's this for a theory?
I was watching Pathways Out of Darkness again, and this idea struck me: the theme Bungie keeps coming back to with their previews of Destiny is [i]Hope.[/i] It's a hopeful world, the Guardians are the City's last hope, etc. What if that's what the traveler is... To the Fallen, the Cabal, the Hive and the Vex?
The 5th Enemy, the unknown one, is presumably what 'knocked us down.' What if this same force was what drove all the other enemy factions into our solar system in the first place? I realize how similar this will sound to Mass Effect, but what if this 5th enemy has destroyed/is in the process of destroying the civilizations of the Fallen, the Cabal and the Hive? And the Vex's creators? If I were them, and I heard about a massive, mysterious sphere that somehow protected the last of humankind from the threat of this 5th Enemy, I'd probably be desperate enough to want to harness the power of the Traveler for the good of my own race.
In short, my theory is that the 5th enemy is the reason for our solar system being overrun by the other enemy combatants. The Fallen, Cabal, Hive and Vex are all in our system to harness the power of the traveler, to save themselves--the Traveler is their last [i]hope.[/i]
I included the above image in this post because I noticed, firstly, how the Fallen and whatever the larger creature is in that piece of concept art are all effected by this glowing green entity, force, w/e; what if that's the 5th enemy? Or was created by the 5th enemy? If the 5th enemy has some space magic of its own that can enslave entire species to it's cause, it would stand to reason that the only thing that could stop it would be an opposing space magic--e.g. the power of the traveler.
Anyways, that about sums it up. Hope that wasn't too TL;DR. Thoughts?

3 RepliesExtra bit: The Vex have been sent back in time by their creators because their creators are about to be wiped out by the 5th enemy. Perhaps their creators... Are us? A version of humankind that failed to harness the traveler's abilities in time to same the last light of civilization?

Not bad. The only thing I don't agree with is this: it was most likely all 5 races that destroyed humanity as we know it, not just one (but you could be right). Also I agree with the fact the 5th unknown race is most likely a more powerful life form than those that we have seen

That is a very sound and logical assumption of what we can expect in the game as it develops and evolves but not to poke any holes I'm relatively positive thats a deathwalker in the back ground but even so it still can be that they are being controlled by that green light or it might just be some fancy effect coloring, we will find out soon enough

3 RepliesThe more I look at that picture, the more I realize the Fallen and Cabal are DEFINITELY possessed/enslaved by something. They're walking together, and the smoke and green light coming out of their bodies really can't be explained by anything else.

2 RepliesThis theory isnt that unsound. Not at all, since the tagline for Destiny is just that , Hope. And the hope lies with the Traveler, but all we know is that he/she has stopped above the Last City, it might even be dead having spent it's last powers to save us and the Last City. Sure, the fallen Cabal and Vex are all out to save their own races, or perhaps the remnants of it for the onslaught from the 5th race. I dont think the Hive have that in mind, they are a collective of insectoid like aliens that probably only are there to futher their own genetics and improve themselves further. They can even be the vanguard of the 5th race, there only to sow destruction and chaos softening up defenses and breaking the spirits of the race that the 5th's are out to conquer or destroy.

From what little we've seen, encounters contain one faction of one race. If the 5th race does have this power, I could imagine their missions to be challenging. Assuming that there wont be traditional difficulty settings (Easy, Normal, Heroic, Legendary), this might be a good way to scale up the difficulty of missions in the later part of the game.

hmm, it would make a cool story, but I reckon they would try and team up with earth if it was a common enemy. Also I think the fall of human civilisation, after the 'golden age', will have had something to do with all the enemies...I hope there are a few rivalries/disagreements between some of the different enemy types though, so we see them fight each other too.
