I want to first of say sorry for all the Superman threads. He just really interests me and I want to know more about him and the DC universe.
Now, the question. In Man of Steel, when Kal and Lois go to the General with the plan to get rid of the World Engine, Lois says that being around the Engine will make Kal weaker, due to its terraforming into an atmosphere similar to Krypton. But, doesn't Kal get his powers from the Sun, not the atmosphere?
Around blue stars, he's human-like. Around Yellow stars, he's typical Superman. And around Red stars, he's much stronger than his yellow star self, correct? So, isn't it more about the star he's absorbing energy from than the atmosphere he's in? Any help would be appreciated.

In the comics, it's yellow or blue solar radiation. In MoS, it's the entire atmosphere. Also, it's the opposite around blue and red stars; he's stronger around blue suns because he's taking in more radiation, and he grows weaker around red suns because they don't give off enough radiation.

I don't know anything about that sorry

Anyone?

Actually OP around red stars he's human like, not blue ones. Blue stars make him far stronger than ever.

Yes, and given how the clouds were blotting out the sun... And it's because he hasn't adapted to the foreign atmosphere- he can't breathe properly.
No, the space scenes aren't plot holes. He doesn't breathe in space- there isn't a single scene in it where he inhales.
Edited by GKR: 8/26/2013 3:01:45 AMI'm not sure about the atmosphere terraforming part, but you've got the sun effects backwards. A red sun leaves him powerless, a yellow sun gives him great power, and a blue sun gives him even greater power.
