If we created a fully self aware computer system,
Would you consider it to be a living thing?
Would it have just as much a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as anyone else?
Think about Robots and Androds that have already captured our hearts,

I've only just been born, you can't kill me yet...
Could we let them be human?
-
Who can forget AI's like Cortana and Serina? Do you consider them alive? OT; yes, I consider them alive
-
Not sure I could come up with a definitive "yes" or "no" answer on the spot.
-
I'd consider a rock alive. Its got single cell organisms covering that thing so: therfor its alive
-
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrients
-
Of course not.
-
It really depend on you idea of" living" I feel that the intelligence and becoming self aware as a living being, must be accompanied with a personality, it must feel emotion, understand love, have hopes and dreams..... This is a terrible conveyance of my idea, but that us due to vagueness of that idea and how it's implications of us creating "life" really disturbs me for some reasoning can not explain
-
If it's self aware, it's pretty much alive.
-
If it can think and want right, feel emotions; then yes, it's very much alive.
-
I'll consider it sentient but Im fairly certain that by definition it cant be considered alive.
-
This reminds me of Ghost in the Shell's philosophy. If you implant your mind into an artificial body and cyber brain, are you still "human"? Do you still have a "soul?" If the body malfunctions, you die, as it's only electronic, but you are still capable of learning and emotions and EVERYTHING you were capable of doing with an organic body and brain. What really makes us "alive?"
-
Living things exhibit motion, at least internally. Living things grow through assimilation. Living things can reproduce at some point in existence. Living things are born from a similar predecessor. Living things have limited variability. Artificial intelligence may become sapient, but does not necessarily make them alive.

Edited by GKR: 8/20/2013 3:01:14 AMI guess so.
-
fully self aware
Of course. If it is self aware then it is a living thing.
-
General rule of thumb for me is, if it can want rights, it deserves to have them.
-
Yes. Humans are alive, and we're just a massive system of biochemical reactions. Who's to say that some other being couldn't assume consciousness through a massive system of circuitry?
-
If it's like Bladewolf in MGR were he had a memory of a Human and Thought process of a Human, Legion, EDI, Eliza (Deus Ex) and borderline Cortana. Yes If's like the G.W AI, Reapers and Pre-Reaper Code Geth. No
-
Our organs are our circuitry, so yes. I just hope we never take this step.
-
No. They do not respirate, reproduce, grow/develop, excrete waste, or are made of living cells.

EVE YOU CAN'T BLOODY FORGET EVE I WAS GODZILLA AND I WAS MELTING THROUGHOUT WALL-E
-
The moment anything becomes self-aware, it is entitled to the same rights and privileges as self-aware organics. Though sentience and self-awareness vary a bit.
-
I'd say yes, but also put emphasis on the word "artificial" when describing it. They seem alive enough to me, but lack a few points that science uses to describe life (I.e. the ability to grow)
-
Like glados?
-
Can it hurt?
-
It would be equal to everyone else. And it would also have the right to peace, order, and good government.
Canadian, bitch!
-
If it cannot grow or reproduce then no. It's not alive, it's just aware.
-
If it can think for itself, it is alive.
