Interesting Development in Online Feminism

So if you don't already know, a few days ago a woman on twitter started #solidarityisforwhitewomen, criticizing online feminists for advocating solely for "privileged white women." The # has since picked up a lot of steam as other women from around the world note perceived racism/ethnocentrism in the movement. The fact that many of these online movements have yet to discuss the wage gap between white women and minority women is one of the things cited as evidence of their racism. The results have been kind of fun to watch. Many of the more frivolous forms of "oppression" western women are subjected to (elevatorgate) are coming under fire by other woman. In addition, racist remarks are flying from both sides of fight, which is funny, if not a little sad, given what they claim to stand for. In fact, a woman recently used the same logic behind the "you can't be sexist against men" sentiment to argue that you can't molest white women, though I don't know if she's a legit account, or a /pol/ creation (/pol/ is making fake accounts and actively trolling on both sides to fan the flames). Personally, I think it's an interesting opportunity to observe how fallacious the notion of "universal feminism" is. If you accept that gender is defined by culture (I do), then you'll note that it seems highly unlikely every culture defines it in the same way. This can lead to well-meaning feminists accidentally "oppressing" women themselves. For instance, the way many western women speak about Muslim women (that they need to be "saved" from their veils) completely disrespects and disregards what those veils mean to those women. The fact that they continue to wear them when they live in western nations, the fact that they choose every morning to wear them, should be hint enough that they do it because that's what they're comfortable with, just like western women choose to wear what they're comfortable with. It's an interesting discussion no doubt, and if you're into this kind of thing I'd definitely go watch it.

 • just gonna throw it our there that they wear the veils because they have grown up with the belief that they need to from birth. Also if they go to a western nation with partners they are normally very strict and traditional and still enforce it. Ever noticed how many western born muslim women don't actually wear them?
