Is Nathan Drake a killer?

Haha... sorry for the weird thread. My friend and I were having this discussion and she brought up the fact that Joel's actions in The Last of Us were perfectly justified. She also said that Nathan Drake is a psychopathic killer. I found her statement pretty ridiculous. Does Drake really kill because he wants to? Is he doing good deeds for the world by taking out very dangerous men? I think by the end of UC3 Drake realizes he loved Elena more than all the treasure he ever wanted. I am curious to see what people think. I said Drake is not a killer because he is not killing any innocent people. She said he is a shithead for throwing that one guy in the Istanbul museum off the ledge(who did not die by the way) Oh and after we had this "discussion" she believes I was silly for not believing her that Joel killed for a reason. By her definition: Nathan is a psychopathic killer, whilst Joel has a reason to do it. I honestly do not think Drake is a killer for various reasons. He gets fired at first. It seems perfectly justifiable to survive for himself. If Drake is a killer(her words) then so are various other characters. http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=9085531 This article is a good read. Lazarevic is an example of a killer who kills in cold blood. He is an example of a terrorist. My friend sees Drake as a psychopath... and it honestly bothers me. Thoughts?

  • Nathan Drake is just as sociopathic as all of the brown-skinned mooks he guns down. The only reason why he appears to not be completely apeshit insane is because he's the protagonist and as such, is afforded the bare minimum of likeability.

      • Nathan Drake always incidentally runs into evil people looking for the same treasure. He kills only evil people.

          • I'm pretty sure in Uncharted 2 (I'm playing it just now) when you are in the museum he refuses to kill the guards. My guess is that he kills to survive not because he wants to.

              Uncharted 2 spoilers:
Lazarevic actually addresses this in his villain monologue after his boss fight. He's like "you think you're better than me? Do you know how many people we've killed today, Drake?" (Not the actual dialogue, but something to that effect)
I just remember it kind of shattering my perspective on Drake, considering this kind of adventure stuff is something he chooses to do. As in, Drake could just avoid all of that danger if he was in a different line of work. But he doesn't, because he likes what he does.

              • Drake isn't a killer; the bad guys are ordered to kill him. What's he supposed to do? Not kill them because he would be a psychopathic killer? Your friend is a shithead, he wasn't trying to throw him off a roof.

Joel kills to protect a young girl, and himself in a world that is dying, and killing each other brutally in a world truly fractured. Joel kills out of necessity and infected. Not because, hey...you look killable, unless you want to play that way. Snake kills because IT IS HIS job, and he prevents actual bad stuff from happening...or tries. To prevent crazy wars from being worse. Master Chief is fighting a war against fundamentalist Aliens, and a long gone insane Didact. To protect Earth. Sam Fisher can kill because IT IS HIS job to protect his country. You can also play the games without killing anyone. Adam Jensen can go the entire game without killing an innocent. He can just kill the triad of evil, and evil lady of doom. To save the world. Nathan Drake goes around killing "mystical" monsters or Scooby Doo Villains, and anyonw else in his way, IN THE NAME OF TREASURE! Oh and to kill anyone non-white for the most part unless they have breasts.

                  • You wanna know who's a psychopath that will kill because he wants to? Tommy Vercetti from GTA3:VC. He is the first GTA 3d era character to be a total monster(not counting claude he has no personality). Killing people on a whim. Berating Lance Vance constantly which by the way I don't blame lance for betraying Tommy after all the shit he put him through. He went and became the biggest asshole ever and he made you hate him as the player character.

                  • Drake's kind of mentally messed up. They touch on that in the third game. It's become a running gag in gaming that Drake is indeed just a psychotic killer.
