Nerds

Would you consider yourself a nerd just because your a gamer? And is it fair to be labeled as such in modern society when nerd is such a negative connotation? Do you care? I'm sure a lot of people have had trouble being a "nerd" in their life for loving what they do. I know I have. I personally have learned not to care about what others think of my hobby and my preferred pass time. Tell me your stories and opinions.

  • I'm almost a grown ass man and I custom made a light saber at Downtown Disney. I wear shirts with obscure references to older games and I feel good about myself when only select people can relate. I play Fallout PnP, which is DnD without the negative social stigma. I am currently trying to teach myself a coding language. I spent as much time reading Star Wars/Asimov as I do socializing. I play more videogames than any other kid on my swim team. I am a nerd. I have a passion for videogame. I'm also a gamer or a geek. Even though the majority of my time is spend playing videogames or working out, I'm still a nerd and f'ing proud of it. Being a nerd is not a bad thing. It's not 1985 anymore. We are celebrated and cherished as the bringers of a new age of technology. We are powerful now.

  • No, I'd might call myself a nerd because: -I have hobbies (Math, Philosophy, etc.) that are not socially acceptable to have -I was a social outcast for most of my life before senior year of high school, had no real friends, and was (still) socially awkward -I still have a very small pool of friends -Never had a girlfriend -Introverted as hell -Still go to Book Club meetings -Owned a LEGO Death Star and Millenium Falcon before I went to college -I owned a 500$ Telescope and similarly valued Microsope before I went to college Speaking of which, I don't like calling myself a "nerd" - firstly because I don't know if I can really consider myself one anymore, and secondly because the meaning of nerd has changed in the past 5 years. I'm a Firefighter and a Cadet in the Army, which are two professions that nerds are not known for going for...and being Introverted/Socially Awkward while liking something out of the norm does not automatically make you a nerd. Secondly, "nerd" is no longer a word for social outcast - now everyone thinks they're a nerd because they're subscribed to I -blam!-ing Love Science on Facebook, wear thick rimmed glasses (which are actually in fashion now anyways), or because they like something that's even slightly out of the norm, so "nerd" has became less of a stigma and more of a tagline for enthusiast/normal person who doesn't know the difference. • It's frustrating when Gamers are considered Nerds. I'm not a gamer but I am a nerd, and I find those call of duty kids that call everyone a fag only soils the reputation of nerds.

  • You could consider me one as I am extremely involved and knowledgeable in Halo lore. But then I have a social life and all that. Depends on your definition of a nerd.

  • Yes, I'm a nerd and considered one even though I sprint and work out 5 days a week with people who are the coolest kids in school.

  • First off, there is a difference between a "nerd" and a "geek." A nerd is that guy who does math for fun and has straight As. A geek is someone who plays too much PS4 and gets a limited edition Ghostbusters comic book from a convention. I consider myself more of a geek, mostly because I play too much PS4 and have a limited edition Ghostbusters comic book I got from a convention.

Did I ever tell you how I got my username? Because really that doesn't exactly justify the nerd portion on it's own. Was does though was my early addiction to television, my years of going to MOSI summer science camp, and of course my game-related things. (Including some board-game related stuff). Stuff that could be used as proof aside: I've been called Rhynerd before I even seemed nerdy. Ultimately though it matters not. Rhynerds will be Rhynerds, even when they're trails of thought drift. Am I still on topic?

    • I tend not to use overused labels such as nerd, geek, or dweeb. In my mind there are only two kinds of people. There are the alphas and the betas. If you're a gamer then you're also a beta.

      • No. I label myself a nerd because I read a lot, am very antisocial, am obsessed with scifi, do good in school, play a lot of video games and just generally do a lot of the stuff that is labelled into the stereotype.

Am I a gamer just because I play video games? Am I a hipster because I can enjoy irony? Am I a lyricist because I sometimes come up with sweet rhymes? Am I an asshole for not subjecting myself to labels mindlessly?

            • I proudly call myself a nerd. However, most people I meet in real life describe me as being cool, funny, and apparently intimidating? My XBL motto reads, "Coolest Nerd You Know". Seems fitting and catchy to me.

            • Came to terms with the fact that I am. I play video games often, I watch plenty of Scifi, and I'm pretty intelligent. People don't say it to my face though.

            • A "nerd" is just person who partakes in very niche hobbies and interests. Science, comics, video games, et cetera. Any negative connotations are applied to the culture. Not native to it.

There's a difference between being a gamer and a nerd. However, I qualify for both titles.
