How arre we "Speeding things up"

I hear all this crap about making species die sooner than they should or warming up the planet faster, but how do we know it's not meant to happen that way? How do we know that these animal won't die at the same time in a different time line with different circumstances or the planet warms up around now even if the industrial revolution never happened? We have nothing to base that on except for the past but even then we cannot be 100% sure, it's mainly theories I mean how can we know what the temperature was 50,000 years ago and how do we know that clue is 50,000 years old? It's all crap we cannot prove but used for guilt.

  • CO2 absorbs infrared (heat) thus the moniker greenhouse gas. For the past 800,000 years the atmospheric levels of CO2 only reached up to 300 parts per million (ppm). Prior to the Industrial Age we were at 280 ppm. The average today is around 400 ppm (at 397 ppm), a 30% and 40% change respectively. That additional heat absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere translates into energy, which amps weather phenomena. The point is the Earth is changing faster than it should sans our artificial involvement. A natural change to climate would normally allow for a majority the endangered populations to adapt and survive. So in some examples, we are instead seeing the entire population drop off because as a gene pool they cannot handle the change fast enough.

  • 99% of all species have become extinct. Seriously, the planets been through a hell of a lot worse than anything we are doing. Plus, I'm 17. By the time I'm old enough to actually make a difference, the situation will already have been decided. As evidence for my non belief, I offer these facts: -the polar ice caps have already shrunk to half their average size, but we have yet to see any related flooding. -the earth goes through natural warming and cooling cycles. We are already on a warming cycle. Anything that is happening now will already be happening regardless of what we do. -we have already surpassed an average of 400 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere. Global warming is both inevitable and irreversible. Basically, I can do shit all, so I'm not gonna worry about it.

    • Well there are animals dying because of humans.

      • Ohh yea I forgot humans have nothing to do with killing off animal/plant species (deforestation) or anything like that.

        • You can tell carbon levels and other atmospheric conditions from 50,000 years ago and even farther back with Antarctic ice cores containing minute amounts of past atmosphere drilled up from very deep below the surface. Past temperature can be found in a similar manner. Above is a graph showing temperature and CO2 levels for about the last 400,000 years. Notice the massive spike in the present age.

          • We're a factor, not the only factor, but one of the most impactful due to our outstanding ability to create and destroy. I think it's wise to acknowledge that, and if we like the world we live in now we should attempt to deter its change if we perceive that change to be negative (:- )

          • Well, humans filling the atmosphere with all sorts of greenhouse gasses can't have anything to do with it...

            • Interesting how you believe that scientists would have any reason to make these claims in the wake of outstandingly solid evidence besides the fact that we actually are.

                • Global warming affects Earth's ecosystems. Many species are dependent on the planet maintaining the status quo of said ecosystems. When the ecosystem is altered, the conditions for the organisms are altered as well. For example, organism A can't survive in a different climate and goes extinct. Organism B's main food supply was organism A, and without organism A to eat, organism B either goes extinct or invades other ecosystems to find food, the latter of which can drastically change other ecosystems. It's not instantaneous, but it's a domino effect that's difficult at best to stop. Also, humans haven't yet sen how much damage they've actually done to the planet. Even if greenhouse gas emissions stopped completely at this moment, human caused global warming would still continue. The majority of the current change is still natural, but in the next 20-30 years, the planet will warm up much faster due to the carbon emissions caused by human activity.

                • It's scientific fact that part of the reason that the planet is warming up is due to humans (this coming from someone who dislikes the majority of the green movement). However, the majority of it is natural. It seems to me that we're starting to head in the right direction. Cars are becoming more fuel efficient, and more fuel efficient cars are becoming more affordable.

                  • Allow me to answer your deep and thoughtful query with somewhat of a straw man. :P "Well, yes, officer, I know that by shooting that man in the head, I killed him. But how do you know he wasn't going to die anyway? In an alternate timeline where I did not possess intent to randomly walk up to a random person (who turned out to be that man) and shoot him, my lack of intent could have, by way of the butterfly effect, altered the path of a bus, causing it to directly strike him and kill him. You can't prove that he would've lived had I not killed him; your attempts at making that claim are just cheap guilt-trips." "I'll bite. I suppose in some metaphysical sense, we can't prove that he would've lived, but you still shouldn't have shot him."
