Customizable Space Ships

It's been stated more than once from Bungie employees that the space ship has some level of importance and will be customizable. Ships will be personal, and we will be able to "upgrade" them as we see fit. There has been some understandable skepticism about whether or not we will be able to fly our spaceships manually, or fight in space or in high atmosphere. My question is: What other purposes could space ship customization have other than dogfighting with cool lasers and missiles? What is the point of spending in-game money on upgrading a ship if it doesn't really DO anything? Is it purely aesthetic? What are your guys' thoughts? Here are some of my own theories: -Advanced engines or warp drives will enable ships to transport us to other planets -Cloaking/shielding on ships will enable us to travel to hard to reach locations for advanced, "deep behind enemy lines" missions -More advanced ships might come with more advanced ground assistance, i.e. upgrading from a "Sparrow" to like a "Pike" for example. -A ship made entirely out of platinum would be awesome

  • They said that you will have vehicles in the game and I'm pretty sure your ship will be used to transport your vehicle to you Oh and by the way why does everyone act like ships will be used in Combat (space combat maybe) but calling your ship down getting in it and flying in the sky while shooting all your enemies down is kind of overpowered. It all may depend on how it is implemented maybe it could Help you in combat but not nessessaraly have you Carpet bomb the place maybe your ship could drop ammo, or Health, some shields, or Maybe Drop down weapons you have stored in the ship or if your friends are near you and you need help your ship (or your ghost) could tell them to get over there and help him.

  • Mostly Aesthetic allowing players to create and showcase there spacecrafts. It's all about immersing ones self further into the game feeling like you have done something to effect your Destiny experience. I guarantee people would be asking for it if it was not already announced.

  • Ships dropping with sparrows would be both nice and feasible

  • Im sure that the ships will probably just be your "home room" where you can stash your stuff in between matches. Bungie isnt trying to make a space shooter game. Ships will simply be your home and the base of means to select destinations to travel from one world to the next. They may make ships controllable in future games, but not this time. At the end of the day, who cares?

    • I have several concerns about customization and upgradability for ships in a large world. First, if the story line does in fact take us to other planets (which you seem to gather just by looking around the homepage) the ship must in fact be fairly large. I'm not looking for the SSD Normandy-02 or anything (the Normandy 1 would suffice...so long as Seth Green gets to be my pilot again...) but something of equal size and dominance would be appreciated. Now, for customization, are we talking "oh, look at these tiny ship models i've bought from vendors all over the campaign and they're just sitting inside a glass container, unviewable!" type customaztion? Or, have our benevolent developers given us something truely awe inspiring like custom paint designs, insane decals and different components that alter the look and feel of the spacecraft (from a Pink hello kitty plastered spacecraft that you just want to hug to a spikey, aggressively sleek spacecraft with matte black paint schemes and skulls with the clan logo plastered across the wings)? These are some factors of customability that (bungie knows this) fans drool and steal money from their momma's purses for! NO!!!! I LOST MY COFFEE!!!! OH! Right, Upgradability! AHEM! My only concern for upgradability is this (if in fact the ships cannot be used for combat anyway). STORAGE SPACE! I am a loot Courtesan (w00t gears 3 medal reference) and the continually expanding world of online only gaming demands the expansion of storage space for the INEVITABLE arrival of NEW content to find, buy, trade, sell or download. With a limited starting storage space (for most online based games at least) it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep everything you've found and actually WANT to keep! Unless you have a MAGICAL dresser (like every single container in the ELder Scrolls Saga) you will EVENTUALLY run out of space...and that just wont do for us horders out there. IF in fact we even have a loot system. Since Mass Effect already pioneered the "Oh wait, its time to load instead of fly somewhere" form of space travel, if Bungie does follow this trend will we be able to upgrade our ships thrusters to INCREASE the speed at which our screens load? On another note, many players like to show off what they've achieved, received or found a glytch to exploit and receive and DONT like having to click on a player, click on their view profile and then scan through their achievements and collections, so would an onboard gallery of collectibles be availiable and upgradable onboard the ship? These are things some serious (if not all that great) players think.

      • I've always wondered this, how big can our ships be? Would they get big enough to need a crew? Can we hire our own crew? If we can walk around our ships, how many rooms would there be to roam? Can we change the inner decor of the ship even if it's just preset choices? These are just a few of the questions I have.
