Simple question: Of all of the classical science fiction books that exist, which ones still hold up today in terms of quality and/or relevance? As for what constitutes classic, I'd say anything before the 70s.
Personally, I'd say Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke holds up in both quality and relevance. It is one of those novels that tackles the scientific and spiritual in a way that complements both, a trademark style of Clarke. Another series I think that stands up is the original Foundation series by Issac Asimov. I enjoyed the way it interpreted the fall of a Galactic Empire, it was based on the Roman Empire after all, and the concept of psychohistory, a combo of history, sociology and mathematical statistics to make general predictions about the future behavior of very large groups of people, is something that coudl apply to our lives today. It was also a fun galactic road trip.

Edited by Swim Good: 5/30/2013 8:27:56 AMDo Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and Dune. Both of them are as fresh and relevant today as they were back in the 60s. Androids, if anything, is only ever going to become more relevant as our technology advances IMO.

Edited by Seggi: 5/30/2013 8:04:27 AMThe Time Mach- Oh, goddamnit. Yeah, what Doc Bacon said. The ideas that motivated and drove the concept of the story that were fresh at the time are still incredibly relevant to our popular consciousness. It's as good and as relevant a scifi story as anything else I've read.
