Car experts of the Flood, I need your help...

For about a month I've noticed that my car makes a loud groaning noise when turning. The above video demonstrates the problem, but the noise is quite a bit louder. It's especially bad at lower speeds. So, any idea what this is and how much it'll cost to fix it?

  • It is your power steering fluid level. Just top it off. If it's extremely low, you might have a leak.

  • My car makes the same noise when my power steering fluid gets low because of a leak. Fill er up once a month and good to go.

  • Pour some oil on the steering wheel, should do the trick.

  • Good luck. I've been fighting car troubles the last two weeks or so. Fix one noise, a new one pops up. It's like -blam!-ing whack-a-mole with noises, and at least $200 per whack.

Power steering fluid, in general, rarely needs changing and old fluid by itself doesn't cause noise - if it was ran low, you might have hurt the pump which could cause noise, but you should be able to tell that by checking fluid level. Most manufacturers don't even recommend changing it in the maintenence manuals because it generally lasts the life of the car. Granted, yours is old, but if I were you I wouldn't expect just changing the fluid to solve the problem. But it is cheap, so a good place to start. You can save money on changing your power steering fluid by drawing it out with a syringe out of the reservoir if you don't have the tools to do a proper flush. Buy the proper fluid and open the reservoir cap on your power steering. Draw out old fluid with a syringe, discard, and put in new fluid. Drive the car for a day and rinse/repeat. Power steering systems generally have a bout a quart of capacity, so once you change a little over a quart or so using this method you can be fairly sure you got most of the old fluid out.

    • Sounds like your Power Steering Fluid is low. I would take a look under the hood and see if you need to add some more. Also your toyota should tell you what fluid to use on the cap of the fluid container. Toyota yeah? the last time I filled mine up it said to use DOT-3 or something like that. either way its a cheap fix, costs around $15-20 to buy the fluid. -First check to see if your power steering fluid is low -if low, fill it up -if problem persists see a mechanic -if its not low see a mechanic

      • Sounds like a fluid leak in the hip carburettor. You'll need to respring the engine tract and oil the suspension panels. Costs around $1500 depending on where you go.

      • Have you tried tightening the Flux Valve on your Rear Capacitor? It's pretty common for these things to come loose or even fall off, which can result in some weird sounds, and even flames if anything goes REALLY wrong. You should be fine, just take it to a mechanic who you trust.

        • Check the power steering fluid as well as all the major linkages for any damage, deterioration, or loosening of the parts. Jack the front end off of the ground and turn the wheel again to see if the noise persists.

        • Your power steering fluid is low. Have you noticed any dark spots under your car from it sitting over night? Is there any oily residue on the bottom of your engine / engine compartment? If so, use this. If the spots under the car cease, it worked. If not and the whining does not go away, get to a mechanic.
