Space Exploration, and why, idealistically, it needs to be in Destiny

Now, let me start off by saying I'm well aware that we don't know if Destiny will or will not have space exploration; we just know that we will have our own customisable ships and be able to travel to other planets and moons. However, how do we get there? Is it just one simple loading screen we face, getting into our ships in a dock and then appearing off-planet? Or will we get into our ships as a player in the docks, able to then explore the world we are on, with the ability to creep out of the atmosphere and into the deep abyss of space? Personally, and I would imagine many others will agree, I hope to high heaven it's the latter. Take the embedded video, for example. This is a huge project which has been in the works for many years, and likely will continue to be a work in progress for years to come. But it has the right idea. The level of exploration is incredible, giving you a truly immersive experience. Granted, I imagine the technology behind it is a bit much for say, the Xbox 360 or PS3 (who knows, maybe it's within reach), and would heavily impact on the storage space on the disc(s). But let's say, through some witchcraft with technology, we do have the ability to cram this incredible feature onto the disc(s), along with the rest of the game content... what would be the benefit for the players? Well, isn't that obvious? The ability to explore our own solar system, grouped with friends in a squadron of custom ships, galavanting around with all sorts of wild and upredictable adventures ahead. Just imagine it:
You and some friends are travelling together from an adventure on Uranus, having successfully defended a stronghold from a Vex attack. Your destination is Titan, where word of another Vex attack has spread. On your travels, you come across a stray asteroid, steadily gliding past you a number of miles ahead. Your group notices another, large ship moving with the asteroid, and so you decide to check it out. You arrive at the asteroid, landing in a large impact crater. You disembark, feeling light from the very low gravity on the ancient rock. Above the crater, over the rim of the impact site, you see another group of Guardians, scavenging for valuable materials to sell back on Earth. You approach and, seeing that they are friendly, start talking to one another about the Vex attack. The group was unaware, having been tracking the asteroid for some time. They offer to join you, to which you accept. The larger group then leaves the asteroid, cargo bays full of valuable minerals, with a common destination: Titan. As you leave the surface of the asteroid, Neptune swings into view, shining bright with the radiance of the Sun, and you continue towards Titan...
The simple fact is, encounters and adventures like this could not exist without space travel in the game. Without it, I just feel that Destiny would not have lived up to its potential. In my eyes, it is a feature the game needs. It doesn't want it. It needs it. Bungie have displayed that they are more than capable of making a space environment in which to move a ship in Halo: Reach, so is it too much to think the same might happen again, only on a much larger scale? Another factor which would have to be implemented to appeal to everyone would be the option to fast travel by accessing a display within the ship or a HUD menu. This means that if you really want to, you can take the long route to your destination (ala Skyrim or Oblivion's travel systems), but if you're in a hurry you can just jump to the orbit of your destination planet. How do you imagine it would work? Do you agree with what I have mentioned?

  • I'm personally hoping for both. I'd like the option to explore space in a free-roaming fashion and even engage enemy ships, but I also want to be able to fast travel to planets in order to save myself the time when necessary.

  • I honestly find the vastness of space horrifying. Like the opposite of claustrophobia. But I think it should still be there. I'd like to fly up through the atmosphere and watch as everything disappears below me. After that I want my feet back on the ground ASAP!

    • I don't care how much memory Destiny is going to take to play. I'll go buy a new hard drive and download/install patches updates and info to my 360 all night, as long as the game is amazing like O.P. suggests.

    • Well, it seems to me that there might be some kind of space battle system in Destiny, after all Bungie pulled it off in Reach and it was awesome... And well clearly the armor customization system implemented in Reach was a trial run of sorts for Destiny, so why shouldn't the space battle portion have been as well?

    • exploration from planet to local moons and asteroid belts would be good, but if you could fly from earth to Jupiter for example, to make the scale of the distance and the speed realistic it would take hours to get anywhere... so i strongly doubt that 'deep space travel' will be in the game but local planet to moon travel would be great. although it may not be in the first destiny but almost defiantly in squeals, considering how much people want it

    • I don't think it NEEDS it, but it would be amazing if they incorporate it in the game.

      • I don't agree or disagree with this game needing all that. It would work yes, but CAN they? Do they have the ability? Yes they showed some ability in Halo but....these guys don't specialize in space combat so if they have any type of space combat it would be a first for Bungie. I would love all this...I really would. But I don't think they have the ability for something like this just quite yet, maybe later down the road who knows. A game like Destiny could make amazing use of this but needing it? I wont say it does because I don't want to ask too much of Bungie.

Anyone remember this? Infinity is a very different type of game from Destiny. Destiny is a shooter. Procedurally generated planets would be amazing, and I'd love to get my hands on Infinity. However, Destiny isn't a space sim. Bungie appear to be crafting their worlds in a very detailed way, not randomly generating them (I assume anyway). I would love it if when you get in your ship, you go to the cockpit, and can see yourself take off (similar to the beginning of Halo 3: ODST except in reverse) http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=aLkVrydpiKs#t=268s <- Like that. However, I wouldn't expect to be able to control this (at least to any huge extent) and to land on any point on the planet would not feasible I imagine. It would be nice to kind of steer the ship, say, lock on to a Venus navpoint and then you do a little Lightspeed jump, and arrive above Venus before the ship's autopilot makes you descend into the clouds. If Bungie are really ambitious, after arrival, some potential ambushes and dog fighting in space would be more than welcome (like in Halo Reach). It would certainly be nice, but very ambitious IMO. And I'd welcome the occasional dynamic event where a mysterious ship or an Asteroid is discovered and added to your ship's navpoints. Where was I? Oh, tl;dr, I wouldn't expect it to be like Infinity. But hopefully it will be cool, one can dream.

        • There is a glimpse of the space travel interface in the Vidoc, and it seems that space will not be a free-roam area. It will simply be a menu and party system interface.

        • the only thing i can think of whenever i think of space travel in destiny is "i hope it is not like star trek", i mean i don't want too when i do it without quick travel taking 3-5 minutes to get to Venus. If they do decide to allow space travel which will benefit the mystery in the game that is one of it's core components to really get the sense of speed right.

I think you're misusing the words, "realistic" and "needs to be".

        • I imagine there will be no space exploration. I can imagine designated dogfighting areas both as PVP and PVP, but I think you're all putting a little too much stock in the open world exploration aspect of this game.

        • Space travel would be pretty sweet, but there should be a few different levels of speed...fast (controllable), light speed (controllable), and hyperspace (GPS coordinates only). Making your spaceship your home is also a pretty rad idea, space warfare would be pretty tough to integrate I would think...maybe spaceship pvp would be a cool aspect. I have not been this excited for a game to come out since World of Warcraft...I have the feeling this game will one of the greatest games of all time!!!

        • Some exploration is fine, meaning if we lift off, we can steer to the moon, or like slipspace to mars and then steer there. But I don't want just random exploration otherwise it'll start feeling like Wind Waker felt. They got the controls and feeling nailed in that sequence in Reach. I don't know, the game is primarily as Bungie's next shooter, so you can't expect space exploration to be too huge a part of the game.

        • I agree 100%. Space travel is something that has to be in Destiny, and the level of exploration would be so much more intense if planetary transitions were seamless.

Would this even work? I don't know about anyone else but I would be pretty bored if I had to fly all the way from planet to planet, and with the required space necessary, I doubt much is going to happen. Maybe it will include space travel but only nearby each planet, say, once you stray far away enough from a planet you could have the option to jump to the nearest planet. If it wasn't a cutscene and actual gameplay the humans would have had to develop some sort of FTL technology to keep me amused or I'm gonna be bored traveling everywhere. Or maybe it could be a cutscene, with the occasional enemy ship showing up and interrupting the cutscene, creating an area in which for the two or more ships to fight. Other than that, I kinda want to leave it to Bungie. This is a big subject and I don't want to get my hopes up to high about it.

          • Can you imagine the amount of programming and memory needed for millions of miles of nothing. It's 93 million miles to the sun and 390 million to Jupiter and if you get lost you are going to be seriously bored. I would like the odd space battle/mission/instance but sitting there for a few months getting to Mars ain't my bag.

            • I see space travel a bit like the old Elite game, you put your co-ordinates in and jump, you then enter an instance of space flight, you may bump into other ships, either friendly or not and deal with the plot. Then you end up at your final destination. I can't see how free flight/destination control could work in anything other than 'Banshee' mode unless you go the full World of Warcraft route with separate PVE/PVP zones.

While I do agree with what you've outlined above, I highly doubt space exploration will be a large part of Destiny. From all we've seen, I believe Destiny is not going to feature a physical persistent world. It is instead going to be made up of bite-sized mission maps that you explore and experience dynamic content. Remember first and foremost that even more than it is an RPG, it is an action-game. Therefore count on a lot of jumping directly into the action with little downtime in between. I don't want to bash your enthusiasm for the concept as I think it would work great in some circumstances. But from all I've seen, I just don't see it possible within the scope of Destiny's design paradigms.
