EDIT: To be fair, I was not the first to post about this article. AnCatMara posted about is here. Either way, enjoy the article!
New article hot off the press at OXM (UK). Check it out if you're needing a rainy day pick-me-up:
Bungie Talks Character Load-Outs, Grognok and Factions
Not a ton of new info, but every little conversation gives us an extra glimpse into this new universe. Staten focuses the conversation on the mystery that is Destiny, and how Bungie wants to keep it at the center of their new IP. He touches on a few important subjects: Grognok, factions, weapons/ships lore, customization and easter eggs, but does not go into great detail (as we would assume).
Below are some of the highlights of the article:
"I can't really talk about crafting, but certainly loot drops are something we talked about. So absolutely you'll be finding - we talked about the tower and the ability to buy things like ships, so I don't think it's too far of a leap to assume you'll be able to buy gear and weapons in some way shape or form, and certainly we talked about loot drops, you'll be able to find things through combat, out in the world absolutely."

"Probably the best thing to say right now is the factions that we've released, they are real factions in the game, so if you find yourself drawn to one of them artistically or the name, you'll definitely have opportunities in the game to, I'd say, heighten these associations."

"The second kind of story you'll be telling is one you wear, one that you've put together over time. The gear that you carry, the weapons that you have, one detail that we really didn't go into too much in the day was just the variety of looks and combat abilities that you can have and so when you encounter someone in a public space they're going to look different from you, they're going to play different than you, they're really going to be quite, quite different from a characterization point of view."
What I gleaned from the article:
- Bungie is playing Destiny close to the chest because they want their new universe to remain mysterious and untainted. It seems at times like they have too much to do and not much to share, but this article makes me think otherwise.
- I know they have discussed this before, but I think that customization will run much deeper than just visual. It sounds that not only will be have combat abilities (awesome) but that they will form a very specific player type that will be seen by all.
- Factions are very real, and I think Staten was putting it mildly when he said that we will have opportunities to "heighten these associations".
- I'M ON A SHIP and I'M GOIN FAST and.... Looking forward to what they have to offer us in the Tower Market. And what's that? CRAFTING!?!?! :)
Discussion Questions!!!
Do you appreciate the manner and timing that Bungie shares information with us?

What does Staten mean in referring to "combat abilities"? I think armor abilities in Reach just scratched the surface; what do you think Bungie has in store for us in this new universe?

What ways do you think factions will impact gameplay in Destiny?

What do you think about having a crafting option in Destiny? Does the idea excite you, overwhelm you, both?

I can't really talk about crafting
crafting confirmed
-
you can can destroy moons in destiny
Compulsory online connections, frighteningly customisable character options and wistful sci-fi vistas may comprise Destiny's bones and arteries, but the game's lifeblood - if you'll forgive the fruity phrasing - is mystery.
Not sure about how I feel about this...

Very exciting and interesting news. I'm glad that Destiny is going to feature a lot of customization for its players. Also, OP, I think you're right about Staten underplaying the extra goodies we'll get when aligning ourselves with a certain a faction. I can't wait for this game any longer. I just want a new ViDoc, a trailer or something! :-)

Edited by externalmemory: 4/24/2013 3:27:51 AMJS didn't imply there will be crafting at all. It was in direct response to this question from Jon Hicks, the OXM editor: Will players customise their characters by way of loot drops and rewards, or will there be gear crafting? I can't really talk about crafting, but certainly loot drops are something we talked about. As in, loot drops and rewards definitely confirmed, and I'm neither confirming nor denying crafting. Not sure how you got that twisted into hint toward confirmation, OP.

"one detail that we really didn't go into too much in the day was just the variety of looks and combat abilities" Sounds like there could be skill trees of some kind.

Edited by TheEyeOfOdin: 4/18/2013 12:42:23 AMI am glad with the pace they are releasing information. The game won't be released for at least another 10+ months so there is that much time for them to give us information. I would lose interest if they told us everything at once. It makes new information that much more exciting and revealing. As for Factions: That is exciting. Not heard much about them though. Anyone know or have links for the names/flags and differences between the factions?

My curiosity is tingling.

What about weapon customization?? Any word

I posted this earlier but you've made it far sexier, is there any way that threads can be merged? I'd be happy to bung mine in here if so.

not really a ton of new stuff... but still exciting!
What does Staten mean in referring to "combat abilities"? I think armor abilities in Reach just scratched the surface; what do you think Bungie has in store for us in this new universe?
i would really love to see more diversity than the typical game. weve all see invisibility, jetpacks, shields, etc. i would really like to see some rare and unique combat abilities. maybe something like emitting a healing aura that resonates from your body, or "quick hands" that makes quick scoping and reloading happen in half the time, or maybe "meat shield" which increases decreases your damage output but doubles your shield so you can draw attention away from enemies. i dunno those are just a few ideas....
