In one hundred years, or maybe sooner, could electric engines be more powerful than internal combustion?

Like, what I'm asking, is once the technology gets there, could it be that top fuel drag cars have to switch to huge electric motors, because their internal combustion engine can't compete? Could an electric engine become more powerful than a internal combustion engine of the same size?

  • For motorcycles(Lighter weight, dirt oriented models in particular), electrics are already making insane advances, already putting out similar HP numbers(if not, better) to a 4 stroke 450, which is the largest motocross displacement class(although, the 2 stroke 500 class that was ended put out better numbers, no longer existent though, to much power, to little control). 140 minutes is about what you'd expect from a dirt bike of that size as well. Containing the power(batteries) are what's holding them back.

  • At the rate battery technology is going, I doubt it. How long do most laptops last? Five to seven hours? A phone lasts about a day? Nah son.

I can't remember where I read it, but I believe Mercedes (not sure) are close to releasing a 720BHP electric hypercar.

They already are. A constant supply of power from an electric engine also has potential for higher torque than a combustion engine.

      • In 100 years, I'd hope for fusion engines, or at the very least, hydrogen fuel cells.
