In-atmosphere flight with space craft

Plain and simple. Would you like this idea? I certainly would, but only in some areas, though. For example, one does not simply fly into Fallen territory without getting shot down by a spider tank. Do you think anti-air equipment should be a feature in Destiny? This would leave a lot of room for strategies and such. It would also make traveling on foot much less dangerous or tedious. You could have a few buddies aboard your ship, and you're going to attack some Cabal on Mars, but there's a huge anti-air battery preventing you from landing right on their front lawn. So, you drop your buddies off out of the AA battery's range, and it's like a little mission already! Wouldn't that be fun? If you have any input on this topic, feel free to post it here!

    • I would really enjoy this, but it also wouldn't be fair if you could just strafe every enemy installation that you run into. Maybe it would be more fair if they instituted a fuel and ammunition system for our spacecraft so we aren't these infinite skybound death machines. It would force characters to make wise decisions. Do you blow all you ammo and fuel in a preemptive strike, or do you save it for a getaway or space battle.

          • They might be able to do something like that for the public events like if your in the city and one starts you could fly out in your ship and start dogfights with the other ships in atmo and you could see everyone on the ground but you don't want to try and help out cause all your bullets are explosives and friendly fires always on

            • What about how Eve Online does their Space support in Dust 514? The fire-team can use a target painter to mark where a ship should shoot, so the pilot can have a place to attack without having to strafe the entire area. And from the looks of it, it would be pretty easy to abandon your ship if the pilot is driving under the influence. The player "beam" looks pretty flexible. But that is a lot of game play to add to the already enormous system they already have. It would be more feasible to have a target painter ready to assist in open sky, with a cool-down on airstrikes, with your own ship being controlled by an AI.

            • This does seem like a great idea overall, but the question is "Is this doable?" For a space-craft to be able to fly in atmosphere it would have to be a huge area in which case there is either A)large areas where you are outside the main objective battlefield, or B) in my opinion to have a world large enough where space craft's are needed they would have to be pretty low-poly. Seeing as how with rendering a map big enough for everyone to fit, big enough for a spacecraft(and possibly some anti-airguns), render all the other vehicles, render weapons lying on the ground {if there is any(plus with a huge map there would probably be a lot of them)}, and then render the players themselves? That would take tons of processing power, plus tons of graphic power to be able to render all that, and not have it low poly.

              • I like it. Imagine this. Your squad's stealthing a Cabal camp for that contains a piece of technology that could really help the war effort. The Cabal already know you're there and are alert to any and all threats. It's night time and it is difficult to see targets. First, the marksman in your squad moves to a position away from your squad's designated point of engagement, the rest of the squad moves in position behind one of the Cabal. Then, you can call in an airstrike on a couple of vehicles and explosive equipment. T-minus 10 seconds. Eliminate the target in front and dispatch him quickly before anybody notices. T-minus 5 seconds. Give the signal for your overwatch to engage. His suppressed rounds pierce through two unsuspecting Cabals. Your squad moves in. T-minus 2 seconds. Sprint towards the objective. The Warlock in the group activates a short-range EMP so the door is unlocked and hostile targeting systems are offline. T-minus 0 seconds. The assault begins before a Cabal can cry a warning. Your friend from a above deploys missiles that demolish the vehicles and incinerate several Cabal. Your squad dives in and out of debris and smoke towards the objective while dodging incoming fire from all directions. The marksman kills the front guard while the Warlock activates a shield blocking enemy fire while you hack the door. You're in. The objective lays at the end of the hallway, but every inch of the way is covered by sentry turrets and Cabal who are not happy. You have limited time to make to the extraction point before your allies carpet bomb the place. Safety off. You're sprinting and shooting with your assault rifle while the Titan behind you unsheathes his sword to engage in close-quarters combat. The Warlock pulls out his dual pistols and moves to eliminate the sentries. As one Cabal after another drops, your blood races as the door in front of you starts to shut. You pour into the speed and slide under a melee strike and knife him in the groin. No time left. The Titan tosses a grenade that destroys the door controls, halting the closing door. With your friends busy, you slide under the door and into a brightly lit room. The door shuts. In the middle of the room, a small sphere shines in a strangely beautiful glow. Your heart feels lust and desire, but you shake off the feeling and listen to your mind. You slowly approach the sphere, carefully monitoring your surroundings. Your monitor says normal but your head says extraordinary. Carefully, you pluck the sphere from the pedestal. As you secure the device in your pack, it shines brilliantly then the cosmos inside collapses and shuts down. The feeling of lust subsides but you wonder why. The room shakes. That's not the Cabal. Suddenly, the roof explodes, knocking you off your feet. From the sky, a large, slender ship descends into the immense chamber. Your heart fills with dread as you recognize the symbol of the Fallen on the ship's side. Time to go.

I 've thought of this before. Makes it easier to beat the feet and get your buds out. Though now that I have had a chance to think about it, a lot of people will be playing this game. Do you want to have 10,000 people flying ships around the world? Don't just consider yourself, consider everyone who will be playing this game.

                • I totally think that this would be awesome, but I just want to say that I don't really like the idea of auto-pilot. Birdman's idea was good about the space-combat, up until the cut-scene part. My scenario: <You're on your way to a certain planet in order to help in a on-ground battle, but are ambushed by a fleet of aliens in space. You defeat the aliens and everybody is like "yaaaaaaaaaaay," but then the pilot fails to land correctly and you all blow up.> even though this would be hugely annoying if you crashed, (but extremely funny for any lucky bystanders) it would open up lots of possibilities like being able to land not only at an LZ, but any where on the planet. I also think that there should be certain classes for dealing with different things (like a pilot class). This could enable players to gain an advantage in flying the ship, and make it more fun overall, if every member of the team is need in their own way.

I'd like to offer another thought. Not to shoot down your idea, but I feel like space flight would play out with autopilots involved. What I mean is: The area around a planet, or series of moons (Since you can't "land" on Jupiter) is flyable and can freely control your ship, meaning there could be epic space combat battles just to get to a planet/moon. However, when you get close to entering an orbit of a planet or moon, the game will ask if you would like to land on the planet, and possibly present you with a few Landing Zones to touch down on (therefore allowing the randomization of ground zones). The game will then take over and show you how your ship passes through the atmospheric wall, followed by its landing sequence, with your character hopping out of their ride and onto the LZ. The same could be said about long distance space travel, or LDST (too much for an ODST joke? Okay...). Once you reach the edge of a map, or a point where nothing lies in your path, an option appears to "Insert space travel name here" to another location and then a cinematic (aka load screen) initiates where your ship (and possibly the ships of your buddies that tag along) will enter "Insert space travel name here". There's nothing wrong with this idea, as you still have space combat near planets. It's just less likely that there will be atmospheric battles, and manual atmospheric entry just feels, to me, to be a bit too much. Again, nothing wrong with your idea, and it's all theoretical right now, so I will be impressed if they can pull off your idea.

                  • That would be a great idea! It would certainly make the game feel more dynamic. It would be cool if you could also utilize the ship for exploration. To go to places only accessible with a ship. Like an ancient and unknown weapons lab hidden on the peak of a mountain. You land the ship in the landing bay, and suddenly the doors seal you in. Your ship is 'mysteriously' drained of power. You and your companions are now trapped inside a sprawling complex, and must now find a way to restore power back to your ship, and unseal the doors.

                  • I would like to be able to fly anywhere, over cities, around the traveller, just anywhere and be able to have dog fights, space wars etc.. anywhere knowing that there are potential for casualties on the ground. With that said, AA would have to be a must because the people on the ground wouldn't be able to defend themselves if there are a few ships battling just about the city.. In regards to the whole cut-scene idea, to each their own but I don't think it's a good idea and here's why. 1. I can't remember what game but it has been done before and no one liked it due to the fact that it wasted so much time. 2. I also do believe that some sort of autopilot will be implemented however, wouldn't it be much more fun being able to control your ship into the atmosphere and having the challenge of bring her down properly or else your ship can burn up or be destroyed by debris? I think that would add more depth. 3. it's super redundant, do you really want to see a cut scene everytime especially if you travel between 2 planets frequently? I do like the idea of bringing your "crew" with you and dropping them off in order for them to take out an AA for you and it would also be cool to have to do "HOT" extractions Example: your buddies are under heavy fire stuck on top of a building and depending on the scenario and how many enemies, you can go in with the ship blasting some enemies on your way down then hover beside the back of the building while your buddies jump into the ship. When I mean jump into the ship I don't mean jumping in the air then pressing "X" to enter, I mean having the side door or back door of your ship open and they literally have to jump inside. OR having to do multiple runs to get squads out of a war zone that's about to be over thrown and having multiple ships coming in, some to fight and defend payload ships so they can swoop in real quick, load up and get the hell out of there.

                    • I would love to fly around in atmo, but I'm having trouble seeing how it would work smoothly. If these space-faring ships we're using to travel around everywhere can be used above the battlefield, I see two options: 1. Ships are able to fly around the entire planet's surface to visit different points of interest separated by large areas of nothing. 2. Ships are constrained to fly above certain areas or ship combat areas only. Worlds have interconnected battlefields in one place and you cannot fly to other parts of the world. What I hope for is #1. We'll see...

                    • I have a couple threads about this as well. I think the mixed air/ground combat would open up MASSIVE potential for a FPS like Destiny. Not sure what their plans are, but this would be a sweet addition.

                      • That would be awesome! Judging by what has been said about Destiny being built from the ground up to be better with friends, this sounds like something that will definietly be included. Space combat is already there but I can imagine some PvP in atmosphere aerial combat.

                      • Great idea. But in-atmosphere flight with space craft would be difficult I'd imagine with out the right software or engine. I say that because I've looked into a game called "Infinity". Once you read into the game you will see why I say it will be difficult :p. I would love to see them do this, but idk if they have the ability. Maybe some other game though x). And as for the AA idea....I like it. Definitely adds strategy which is what this game needs!!

                        • I think it would be cool and doable as well. This is Bungie we are talking about guys. But the only problem I see with this is what people from battlefield 3 should all know. The people that like to jet ram or just totally don't know how to fly. That is the problem I would suspect. It would make not only the skies dangerous but the ground too.

                            • why simply stop at just a few buddies on one ship? What if you had something like a troop transport like in Star Wars or even in Halo? Squads get dropped in, neutralize the enemy anti-air, allowing for a larger force to land without any issue. A squadron of fighters and bombers would also be nice as well but that might be stretching things a bit. Wishful thinking.
