Why do you Americans believe that...

We all know that communism doesn't work (because people are people) but socialism isn't as bad as you think it is. It wouldn't hurt if you took a few steps towards socialism.
So why do you misuse the word socialism?
[b]NOTE:[/b] I wouldn't call myself a wholehearted socialist. There are some things I agree with and there are some things I disagree with.
