Many are only just getting their heads around the idea of 3D printing but scientists at MIT are already working on an upgrade: 4D printing.
At the TED conference in Los Angeles, architect and computer scientist Skylar Tibbits showed how the process allows objects to self-assemble.
It could be used to install objects in hard-to-reach places such as underground water pipes, he suggested.
It might also herald an age of self-assembling furniture, said experts.
My god I just love how we get to grips with 1 piece of technology and in no time we have something much much better.
How cool would it be just to see your Ikea products build themselves?
-
4d printer already thought of in Hollywood long ago. Fifth Element nailed it
-
I'm confused as to why BBC is calling it "4D". I know TED is often a bit pseudoscientific in nature, but self-assembling objects don't suddenly become a manifestation of spacetime.
-
Isn't the fourth dimension time?
-
Just because they assemble themselves doesn't mean that they're magical fourth-dimensional objects.
-
I'm calling it now, self-building furniture is gonna take over the world. MARK MY WORDS
-
Were -blam!-ed!
-
I like that it speculated that self-constructing furniture is the endgame
-
Uh, that's pretty cool.
-
sweet jesus that's cool.
