"Value to society"

Does someone need to have a value to society? If someone does nothing to benefit others, is that someone still worthy of life and love? I know so. See, I see "no value to society" thrown around a lot on this forum. Well, who cares? We're all humans. That's the only ticket to respect and love that any of us need. I don't care if you're a drunken homeless man "stealing" people's money on welfare, you're still a human. I'll still love you and give you respect. You don't need to "contribute", you don't need to have a "value". Humanity is your value. Am I the only person who thinks this? It seems we've become more cynical with the ages. Less likely to love and more apt to hate. To point fingers. To call people "worthless", to tell people to "kill yourself". It makes me sad sometimes, I'm not gonna lie. Why can't we all just love each for the humans that we are?

  • To the government, you only have value (however small) when you're alive. You can't pay taxes when you're dead.

    • Do they have to add value...for what? To live? To have rights? Nope. Telling people to kill themselves or that they're worthless is inexcusable though. In economic terms, labor, even when underutilized, has intrinsic value that just needs to be harnessed. There's no such thing as a worthless human.

    • Society has no value to humanity. It can cause humanity to be thrown down the drain. I know, there's that "each generation will have problems". While true, you need to realize something. If each generation continues to grow less intelligent, than humanity will go back the way they began.

    • My belief is to always remember that everyone is a person, no matter how reprehensible. It's a difficult feeling to stand behind sometimes, but I feel comfortable having done so.

    • If you're drunk, homeless, and trying to steal my money, I'm not going to respect you. I'm probably going to hurt and/or kill you. And yeah, you are the only person who thinks that.

    • What exactly "love" entails isn't even culturally universal. Anyone asking this question is really asking "Why can't everyone be like me?" whether or not they admit it to themselves.

      • This OP is the result of people feeling they are "entitled" to things. In fact, it has gotten so far out of hand. People think they are entitled to "love" and "respect." If you want to love and respect OP, you have to work for it. Plain and simple. Nothing comes free in life. Not even human emotion, empathy, and sympathy. One day you'll understand.

        • If enough people start taking and not giving back to society it'll crumble. Vital services collapse, people's quality of life degrades. It affects everyone negatively. It should be everyone's goals to improve their society, not degrade it, which is what you do if you do nothing.

          • If someone's wasting off of our welfare system, and thereby wasting off the money I'm "lovingly" giving them, then clearly they don't love me back. Clearly, they don't deserve the respect I'm giving them.

            • I'm not going to "love you" if you don't give me a reason to. Simply existing isn't good enough.

            • why would I "love" someone when they sit around, leach off the system, and contribute nothing to their fellow mankind?
