Why did Bungie do what they did

About 90% of all Xbox players both basic and 360 know the company Bungie. They have been with Microsoft since the beginning almost. Halo was the crown jewel of Xbox, and Bungie just kept cranking out the series, until one tragic day. At the release of Halo Reach, they started to announce the "break up" of the company. Shortly after they all but disappeared off the face of the earth for around a year or two. I can understand giving the Halo franchise to their shadow that has always been there, 343, but what made them decide to leave their loyal group? Bungie was always a large supporter of Microsoft, since Halo was only on Xbox. Why did they have to "broaden their community" to other platforms (not being consolist, console racist?) but most of the time when companies do that, the games are not as good as their full potential could have been. Take Section 8 for example, great game, Xbox only, now Prejudice comes out, and it sucks... To cross-platform they have to mess with and balance out everything so it is universal. Look at Skyrim on ps3, just getting the DLC we (Xbox players) got months ago. All I'm saying is, why did they have to leave their loyal Xbox gamers that have been supporting them since Marathon Durundal and give in to their rivals. Also speaking of which, why team up with Activision, force behind their main competition, Call of Duty? Now that doesn't even make sense. I understand it all comes down to money, but still, cant give your loyal patriots a little boost, or support in return every now and then? Maybe a special suit, weapon, something solely to Xbox for their 10+ years of support. What do you think about Bungie's actions (minus the fact that it was almost necessary)? Thanks for reading, R00X leader, ZDragonLord X

  • This was not an act of wanton betrayal. Bungie is reaching out to new communities of gamers who can play our games, just like we did when we stopped developing for the Mac and affiliated with Microsoft. A company like ours needs to constantly evolve. This puts a burden on our fans to evolve with us. We'd rather apologize for that than for falling into a routine in which we churn out the same old thing. Destiny will ship on the Xbox. I will play Destiny with my Xbox clan on the Xbox. I will play Destiny with you on the Xbox.

    • Marathon was before Xbox, Bungie never wanted to be stuck with Microsoft they merely used them for funding purposes. Their only goal has been to make great games for as many gamers as possible, games should never be console exclusive, there should be no such thing as exclusive DLC (it just pisses everyone off and companies have got to learn to stop committing suicide on this) and all DLC should never require an Internet connection to use!!!! Once you pay for it that's it, it's yours to play to your hearts content. (Yet another thing companies keep committing suicide on) Nuff said
Bungie was always a large supporter of Microsoft, since Halo was only on Xbox.
Bungie needed funding, Microsoft could provide that. Bungie made a lot of money and grew tremendously, and didnt need Microsoft. Especially since they wanted to make more games. Not solely Halo games. So they got their freedom back. (what i took from what happened)
Why did they have to "broaden their community" to other platforms
Because their goal is to make Great games and get them into as many hands as possible, so that more people can enjoy them. Not just one console, one population of gamers. And consequently you can probably make more money this way too.
To cross-platform they have to mess with and balance out everything so it is universal.
Well its a technical reality that if you are programming for more then 1 system, they are going to require tweaks to optimize it for that system. Though from what Ive heard the PS4 and Xbox720 will have similar Spec and Architecture, which mirror that of PC's, so this time around not much tweaking should be required. So there shouldnt be much of a difference.
Look at Skyrim on ps3, just getting the DLC we (Xbox players) got months ago.
That mainly because Microsoft shelled out the cash to get them early.
All I'm saying is, why did they have to leave their loyal Xbox gamers that have been supporting them
I dont think they did. I get the feeling you dont think they are releasing it for the Xbox720. I think they will, but just like every other developer, they have to keep their mouth shut until Microsoft makes their next console official. The game is confirmed to be released for the PS3, PS4, Xbox360, and its likely it will be announced for the 720 when Microsoft gives them the go ahead. Since this isnt a Loyalty issue. If anything they can be more loyal to gamers.
why team up with Activision,
Probably because Activision is good at distribution. Just as a writer needs a printing company to get their books released. Or at least thats the role i think they would be playing for Bungie.
What do you think about Bungie's actions
Gotta do what ya gotta do to take over the world. #honorablesniper

(Don't quote me on that) I dunno how long you've been gaming, but Bungie's done games for most platforms. And most prior to the launch of Halo on the Xbox. I fondly remember playing Marathon and Myth on my Mac, before I even knew what a console was. And also, don't panic. Bungie isn't a company that'll favor one console over another, they'll do what is necessary to make the gaming experience great for everyone involved. :) So chill out bro. You're still getting Destiny. The only Cats who aren't are the PC gamers, whom I sympathize with, though I find it odd someone willing to fork out enough cash for a computer capable of running modern FPS' can't fork out the cash to purchase a console. (Considering most good gaming machines cost up front $800+)

        • Do you know of the Betrayal medal in various Halo games? I want to know if you think that Bungie betrayed us, the players, the game franchise that they created themselves, and the game that pioneered the Xbox and Xbox Live.

        • They didn't leave us or break up, they just moved on from Halo.

Evolution, it's as simple as that. Those who do not wish to evolve will stagnate and die out. Just as nature intended. (I'm looking at you Call of Duty)

          • If you think Prejudice is worse than basic Section 8, I can really understand where this terrible opinion is coming from. Bugnie didn't betray there Xbox360 fanbase, they simply need a wider audience to justify the scale/cost of there next games, they really just want to make the best games possible.

            • If you're going to talk about how Bunige isn't loyal to the people who've been there "since the beginning", the xBox users have to wait in line behind Mac users. Bungie was making games for Mac before they went with Microsoft and the xBox.

            • Alright, just to be clear: I posted this to see what everyone else has to say about these arguments. They are not mine, but my friend's. He has loyally supported Bungie and Halo throughout his whole gaming life, but, "when it came to them leaving, and even worse switching to the other platform, that's just stupid." I'm here to change his mind be finding good ways to convince him. So far, everything sounds good, except Toxifiles down there, being crude and unfriendly. Thanks for the feedback.

Fun fact: Bungie developed for the Playstation before the Xbox.
At the release of Halo Reach, they started to announce the "break up" of the company
Actually, that was back in 2007. MS wanted 2 more titles from Bungie, so they pushed out ODST and Reach. Now they have no ties to MS for developing.
but what made them decide to leave their loyal group?
A combination of $$$, bordem and wanting to move on.
Why did they have to "broaden their community" to other platforms
To appeal to more gamers. If you're going to take steps to world domination, wouldn't you get as many gamers on board as possible?
why team up with Activision
They've proven they know what they're doing. The publish and market games that sell; see COD.
Maybe a special suit, weapon, something solely to Xbox for their 10+ years of support
Oh, I see what this is about. It's about the exclusive content for PS4 players right? I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox players get something exclusive of their own. Just relax, enjoy the ride.
What do you think about Bungie's actions (minus the fact that it was almost necessary)?
I think it was completely necessary. Many of the forum goers "regulars" that hang around here (myself included), are actually quite bored of Halo. We want something different. Bungie couldn't possibly do Halo forever and there is so much more potential with moving on. You can appeal to more gamers, create universes that are multi-platform and Kickass in more ways than before. They're no longer tied down to Microsoft, they're moving on. Hope this helps any confusion.

                  • Bungie loved Halo, but they desired freedom. They needed to move on and expand. They want to make games they would want to play and enjoy, not be tied down to one franchise on one system for years. Bungie only had ties with Microsoft in the first place to symbiotically boost xbox and Halo sales.
