Backstory Mysteries and Speculation

After looking through all the information on Destiny's backstory so far, I can't help but notice some unsettling mysteries within its premise. Chiefly, how exactly did the events of a galaxy-spanning cataclysm which exterminated over 99% of us become shrouded in uncertainty? The mobility and resilience of digital information would make complete expunging of records unlikely to say the least, and the permanence of traumatic experiences of survivors is a given. Eerily, however, this 'collapse' is an almost perfect mirror of the infamous Classical Maya Collapse which inexplicably decimated (though did NOT destroy) one of the greatest empires of Mesoamerica. Similarities include a colossal drop in total population, and a dearth of recorded information as to the particulars of the fatal era; could it be that its cause not only predates humanity's birth, but has molded the very course of Mankind's progress, for better or for worse? On a lesser note, I'm still perplexed as to how the Last City is going to survive in the long or even short term, Traveler or no Traveler. Just why haven't the aliens made the logical decision to go the whole hog and commit to serious invasion, crushing resistance by sheer numbers, or simply 'polish' Earth from orbit like the Covenant did with particularly intransigent planets? Even given infighting between different alien factions, the weakest group would win the statistics game against a broken race that hasn't even dominated their home world.

I imagine that at some point the various hostile aliens did attack the last remaining city, but they were unable to accomplish a thing. Also, I have doubts that factions will be so hostile to one another. They could just be a frame for some competitive mode, but ultimately, whatever disagreements they may or may not have, it's in every human's best interest to work together.
