Difference between web apps and website?

I was just wondering, what is the difference between a web app and a website? Could tumblr be considered a web app? In terms of creating, which is easier to create, a website or a web app? I was planning on making a website and then I came across web apps so I was wondering, for example like facebook, tumblr, or twitter, are these web apps? Or are they considered websites? Or can they be considered both? Also, when it comes to creating websites and web apps, is there a difference? Like, for websites, you can use html but is there like a different way and process as to how you create a web app? Or is creating them exactly the same thing and done the same way? I know there is a difference when it comes to creating apps for Androids and iPhones, but is there a difference between web apps and websites? Thanks in advance!

  • Nothing, it's just that one is a marketing word and the other isn't.

  • I would consider a website to be a general collection of related web pages within a domain, but with no real intertwined abstract idea of connectivity of focus between them. A web application (I like to think) comes in two flavours: 1) As a high-level, abstract service-oriented architecture which makes use of traditional web pages or web forms as the presentation layer for their backend services. 2) As a self-contained collection of resources (Javascript, CSS, HTML, JSON/XML/YAML/etc...) generally running entirely on the client-side, and therefore comprising of a heavily-focused client-based architecture.

  • In terms of creating, I think they both use very similar languages. The Website I'm working on at the moment (for uni) uses AJAX, PHP, Jscript and XHTML. I think Web Apps probably use very similar languages

  • There is not really a strict definition. you could call Facebook an app. it is a large collection of software that does social media things.
