Non-linear Equipment & Upgrades

With all these RPG elements of gear and levels, I think it is extremely important that Destiny features non-linear upgrades and equipment. What I mean by that, is you shouldn't be finding better gear that replaces what you already have, but rather different options. Lets take a leg equipment for example. Instead of having Greaves +10 armour and Greaves +50 armour, where one is clearly better, it should be along the lines of. Greaves +10 Movement Speed & +5 Armour vs Greaves +20 Armour & -10 Movement Speed Now one is not necessarily better, but rather different, and perhaps more fitting to your playstyle. As I understand it, all gear/equipment is persistent in multiplayer and singleplayer/co-op so having equipment that is different but equal is the way to go, unless we are separated by our levels and expected gear, which would be very lame. Or everything could simply be aesthetic changes.

  • I would MUCH prefer non-linear upgrades. Obviously you will find better and better gear, this cannot be avoided. But they must avoid the simple stat comparisons. For example, if I found a chest piece, I should have to consider many things before deciding to equip it: is the level of protection higher, will the weight of the armor slow my speed, does it have any magical qualities that enhance my current skills, does it match any of my other armor (therefore bringing bonuses), at what rate does the armor deteriorate, and in general...do I look good in this??? I don't want it to take 5 minutes to compare every piece, but if they can make a quick way to compare and contrast armor as you come across it, I think this will make for a consistently interesting aspect of the adventure.

  • hypothetically sidegrades would be like a better upgrade if the things you are taking a penalty to you do not care about anyways.

  • I almost feel as though the non linear upgrades wouldn't work as well with a very "character progression" based game. If our only progression is in our level...not gear or anything. Personally I have no problem with a linear gear progression system as long as gear and ways of obtaining gear are kept intriguing and interesting.

  • I agree with that a healthy mix of linear and non linear upgrades and sidegrades will work best in balance. But I'm more interested in the linear progression of sidegrades however, Destiny appears to me to be akin to a a classic dungeon crawler in the sense that each squadmate will fill a specific role within the team. I think with more upgrades to your waepon/armor/abilities of choice focusing on sidegrades in a multitude of separate yet intersecting paths, unit cohesion and teamwork will prosper.

I think there should be a mix of linearly and non-linearly scaled gear. The promise of rare powerful stuff can be exciting in some games, as long as it's not overdone in either power or frequency.

  • Dude most games do this anyway nowadays why did you make this thread, so dumb. Hey Bungie you should also make it so your shields recharge like all the latest shooters instead of having a set amount of health and losing it and having to heal yourself with health packs.

    • Why would you progress your character if you can't find better armor upgrades? Besides, most RPGs have both leveled AND non-linear armor upgrades. Different kinds of armor with different kinds of playstyles in mind, and different quality armors in those different kinds

    • Agreed OP. If Items do level it would be great if we could upgrade old equipment to our current level. Id prefer to keep the games more fps than mmo grinding.

    • There's magic so enchanting might be an option or we might be able to improve weapons/ armour at a workstation. Right now, the possibilities are endless.

    • not only that, but I'd like to see an armor upgrade system. I was playing Borderlands, and got "stuck" with a sniper rifle for 10 levels. 10 whole levels. I grew attached to the thing (it was purple) and felt extreme remorse when I finally found a gun that was better. A means to upgrade your old stuff also means less homogeneity in high-levels characters. I don't want to be running with 3 people wearing the exact same armor, using the exact same end-game weapons. CoD style weapon customizations would help a TON. Find a new sniper rifle with a better scope? Rip it off and stick it on the old one!

      • Guy want to take some guess on these equipment slots. On the right we have from top to bottom: Fist - This could be an offhand, such as a "casting" glove, or something with melee buffs. Helmet - I think this is pretty clear Chest - Again, clear. Arms | Shoulders | Forearms - It should be one, the other, or all three. But as a FPS we will be seeing our forearms, so it should at least be forearms. ? - No idea here, gloves might be a guess, but it doesn't look like it. Legs, but also doesn't look like it. The other thing I can think of is attachments like capes if they are separate from body armour, but again, it doesn't look like it. Legs | Boots - It's clearly boots, but I'd image it's just a whole slot for legs.
Or everything could simply be aesthetic changes.
Edit: That's how I want it to be, but looking closer at that screenshot, it appears there are different stats for the character.

      • I prefer the idea of sidegrades to upgrades, definitely. If the game has levels then we should be getting more powerful through those. We don't need extra benefit from our armour.

With regards to my first post about +points to armour and movement speed, looking at the video (and the attached picture) it looks like the stats we will be upgrading are as follows. Energy - If all classes have access to magic such as the Warlock, I think it's clear what energy will be. If not, it could be a pool of energy for all skills, such as sprinting, and maybe armour abilities or similar skills. Shields - This seems obvious. Defense similar to Halo. Agility (ability?) - Again, if agility, I think it's clear, movement speed, and perhaps reload speed. Discipline (?) - This could vary from class to class (maybe class skills?), but I think it is regards to weapon handling skills, so recoil and sway for example.

      • WoW style is what I'm hoping for. However, there's one thing I REALLY want. So let's use Mass Effect 1. In Mass Effect, the best armor in the game was this green armor. It just was- best shield/armor stats... whatever. But it was ugly. I want the ability to have any armor I want... but make it LOOK however I want. Like, say this one piece of armor looks totally badass but I get a better item? It would be so cool if I could keep the better item, but give its look that of the cool looking thing. I want that.

        • I agree. I strongly prefer that variety to linear scaling. Though some scaling will have to exist, to make raid rewards worth it (if they're hard) and for leveling. Though, I'm sure there are a multitude of ways around even that.

            • I really hope they have some EXCELLENT counter-hacking measures, I'd hate to play with jerks who'll mod their things for infinite damage, health, speed, etc.

I don't play WoW so correct me if I'm wrong but my room mate plays it and tells me this is what the armor system is like. (could be completely wrong) When you find a weapon/armor piece/whatever you can transfer buffs to that skin and use it. I like that concept. So say you have a "low level" helmet but you really like the way it looks and you find a "better" helmet but you hate the way it looks, you can just create a helmet using the old skin with the new buffs.

              • I like your idea - reminds me of 'The Last Stand' in DoW2. Also, it would be cool to transmute items to give the aesthetic of one item to another item you have with different stats.
